Participation in any of these training opportunities is subject to manager approval. Completing any of these training programs is not a guarantee of advancement or compensation.
You are the captain of your ship and your journey will include the following steps:
- Reflect: Assess your interests, strengths, and goals
- Explore: Research your development options
- Discuss: Meet with your manager and HR to discuss your options
- Apply: Complete HR forms and CSU applications
- Request: Get approvals from your manager and CSUMB HR
- Dedicate: Dedicate time to your development opportunities

Represented Staff
The CSU Collective Bargaining Agreements allow for training and professional development for all represented staff. An employee may be given release time for their professional development if the supervisor/manager determines that the department's operations will not be adversely affected by the employee's absence and it is related to their current position.
A change in work schedule may be approved for purposes of attending one course in lieu of release time. University Police Officers may not use State time for classes.

Non-Represented Staff
Non-represented staff are not covered under a collective bargaining agreement. The non-represented staff have access to the same resources as represented staff. Please follow the steps noted above to discuss your development goals with your manager and complete the appropriate forms and applications.
CSU Fee Waiver and Career Development Fee Forms
The Education Assistance Program allows eligible employees to enhance job skills or prepare for a future career by taking classes at any of the 23 CSU campuses, waiving the greater of two courses or 6 units per semester/quarter. Courses must be job-related and/or part of an individual career development plan. Winter sessions and Extended Education courses are generally excluded at most campuses.
