Assessment and Evaluation Resources

From the Academic Senate Assessment Committee

Assessment is only as good as the conversations it generates.

All faculty (part-time and full-time lecturers and tenure-track) are invited to support student achievement of CSUMB’s Undergraduate Learning Outcomes (ULOs) by applying to be a ULO Scholar and contributing to one or more of the funded projects described below.

Each project will consist of two parts.

1. A Fall and Spring cooperative (meets for 1 - 2 hours approximately 6 times over the semester)
2. On a rotating basis, scholar groups that will study student work to inform assignment design, pedagogy, and professional development (meet for 2 consecutive days in summer, winter/spring). 

Coordinators and scholars will determine meeting dates and times.

Faculty can apply and participate in more than one project.

GE Area A1 Oral Communication Cooperative

Facilitator: Lee Ritscher

For Fall 2026, they will review the survey data we collected in Spring 2025 and compile suggestions to improve oral communication instruction and, perhaps, assessment at CSUMB.

GE Area A2 Written Communication Cooperative

Facilitator: Kelly Medina-Lopez

For Fall 26, the group will revisit the survey data we collected in Spring 25 (potentially re-launching the survey to collect more data) and build from there. The goal is to build a collection of Writing and AI faculty resources that might include assignment ideas (AI-free); sample prompts; lesson-planning supports; time-saving workflows; classroom integration strategies; and policies and guidelines.

GE Area A3 Critical Thinking Cooperative

Facilitator: Patrick Belanger

In Fall 2026, the group will 1) continue working on a student survey regarding understanding of and attitudes towards CT and the teaching thereof, and 2) make minor adjustments to the rubric’s descriptive language.

Information Literacy Cooperative

Facilitator: Sarah Dahlen

Faculty scholars will review the summer assessment results and create teaching and learning materials to address students' areas of challenge.

Quantitative Reasoning Cooperative

Facilitator: Peri Shereen

In the fall, they will review the summer assessment results and create a report for faculty.

Personal, Professional, and Social Responsibility Cooperative

Integrative Knowledge Cooperative

Collective facilitation

Participants in this cooperative reviewed the 2017 CSUMB Capstone Self-Study and developed strategies for advancing CSUMB’s capstone requirement, particularly with regard to how CSUMB’s ULOs can enhance student achievement of MLOs. This group was comprised of some members from other ULO project groups.
