Staying Connected

Clear, consistent communication helps keep our campus connected. Explore how Cal State Monterey Bay shares information across campus and beyond, including official channels, emergency messaging and opportunities to share your own updates.

Campus Communication Channels and Guidelines

The primary way Cal State Monterey Bay communicates with employees and students is through official university email. This includes one-to-one messages and campuswide announcements for faculty, staff and students.

Official messages follow a standard format that is familiar across the university. They will never ask you to enter personal information on a website outside of csumb.edu.

In an emergency, the university shares information through these channels, in this order:

  • OtterAlert
  • the emergency webpage
  • X

Dashboard Messages

Employees can request placement of a message, event or news item on the faculty, staff or student dashboards.

To be considered, dashboard messages must meet these requirements:

  • Be action-oriented, asking the audience to complete a task such as filling out a form or registering for an event
  • Follow character limits: headline (45 characters maximum), description (40–94 characters including spaces), and call to action (30 characters maximum)

Submit a dashboard message request.

Dashboard Banners

Employees can also request a short dashboard banner linked to an important action item or announcement.

Dashboard banners must meet these requirements:

  • They must include a link to a webpage, form or other relevant resource.
  • They must be five words or fewer.
  • They must include an image that aligns with the university’s brand and is approved by University Communications. If needed, University Communications can select an image.

Cal State Monterey Bay uses a tiered approach to share information with employees. Based on the urgency, relevance and needed action, the Employee Communications Working Group, in consultation with appropriate Cabinet members, determines the best channel and timing.

Employees are encouraged to submit content for:

  • Inside CSUMB
  • Dashboard messages
  • The 25Live events calendar

Events are managed by University Affairs, Ceremonies and Events.

Faculty and Staff Dashboards

Employees may request that events, news and announcements appear on the faculty or staff dashboards.

On faculty and staff dashboards:

  • Up to four items may appear under Messages on the right side. These are managed by Human Resources and the Office of the Provost.
  • Up to six items may appear under News on the left side. These are managed by University Communications and the Office of the President.

Inside CSUMB Employee Email

Inside CSUMB is the official employee news and events email. It is published every other Thursday, except during university holidays or when schedule changes are needed.

The editorial board includes representatives from the Office of the President, Academic Affairs and Human Resources.

Please submit content as early as possible. The deadline is 5 p.m. Thursday before publication.
