Make Registration Work for You

Registration at Cal State Monterey Bay follows policies designed to ensure fairness, consistency and student success. These policies outline when schedules can be adjusted, what approvals are needed and the deadlines that safeguard academic progress. Careful planning and use of available resources make it easier to build the right schedule, secure required classes and move confidently toward academic goals.

Get Ready to Register

Before registration opens, it’s important to prepare. Take time to review your academic progress, meet with your advisor, explore course options and build a class schedule that aligns with your goals. Planning ahead helps ensure a smoother registration experience.

Your enrollment appointment is the earliest date and time you can register for classes. These appointments are assigned based on your student level and the number of units you've completed, with those closer to graduation receiving earlier access. Appointments typically become visible in your OASIS Student Center when the course schedule is published, usually in March for Fall registration and October for Spring registration. New students will be notified when their appointment is available to view.

Registration follows a structured order, beginning with priority groups at each class level, then continuing with seniors, second baccalaureate students, graduate and credential students, juniors, sophomores and freshmen. Each group is ranked by completed units, with students who have the highest number registering first. Visit your OASIS Student Center to find your exact registration window.

Priority registration gives certain student groups earlier access to enroll in classes ahead of others in the same class level. This can make it easier to secure high-demand courses and build a balanced schedule. If, for example, all senior students register on a Monday, those with priority status would receive the earliest time slots that day. Students granted priority are strongly encouraged to register during their assigned window for the best chance of enrolling in preferred classes.

Qualifying groups include:

  • Foster youth or former foster youth (up to age 24)
  • Veterans and active-duty military members with qualifying discharge statuses
  • Student parents with dependents under 18 (must update dependent information in OASIS by the published deadline each term)
  • Students registered with the Student Disability and Accessibility Center (SDAC)
  • Participants in the Finish in Four or Through in Two programs
  • NCAA student-athletes
  • Students in approved, university-sanctioned programs that significantly benefit the campus (requires Category 7 documentation and departmental approval)

Some classes may be full when you attempt to register. If a class is closed, you have the option to choose an alternate course or, if available, add yourself to the waitlist through OASIS. If a seat becomes available and you meet all enrollment conditions, you will be automatically enrolled and notified through your CSUMB email.

Waitlist Guidelines

Students may waitlist up to eight units per term and cannot be registered and waitlisted for different sections of the same course. Before being enrolled from a waitlist, all time conflicts and registration holds must be resolved. It is the student’s responsibility to monitor their schedule in OASIS and remove themselves from any waitlisted courses they no longer intend to take. Being on a waitlist does not guarantee enrollment, so students should plan their schedules accordingly.

Registration holds can prevent you from:

  • Registering for classes
  • Adding or dropping courses
  • Accessing transcripts or grades
  • Graduating on time

Holds may be placed for various reasons, such as outstanding payments, missing documents, or unmet academic or immunization requirements. All holds must be cleared before you can register for classes.

How to Check for Holds

Log in to OASIS through your CSUMB Dashboard to view any active holds and instructions for resolving them. Check at least two weeks before your registration date to ensure you have time to address any issues.

Graduate students must maintain continuous enrollment while completing their thesis or culminating experience. If your program does not require ongoing enrollment in a research or thesis course, you must register for Grad 699 through Extended Education.

Grad 699 is a zero-unit course that allows you to stay actively enrolled in your program. While it does not carry academic credit, it fulfills the continuous enrollment requirement. Students pay an administrative fee equivalent to one credit unit, along with applicable registration fees (subject to change).

Contact the College of Extended Education and International Programs for details about registration, fees, or eligibility

Some courses at CSUMB require a permission number, also known as an add code, to enroll. These codes are typically needed if a course has restricted enrollment, such as when instructor or department consent is required, or when your prerequisite grades have not yet been posted in OASIS. You may also need a permission number if you are enrolling during the add/drop period of a term with faculty approval.

Find more information on how to request a permission number.
