Belonging and Access

Creating an inclusive library environment where everyone in the Cal State Monterey Bay community can learn, connect and belong.

Guiding Principles

This page highlights the library’s values and the ongoing work that support an inclusive and welcoming campus environment. It reflects how these values inform the library’s collections, services, programs and spaces. Together, they guide efforts to foster belonging, encourage learning, and support the academic and personal success of the campus community.

Library Diversity Statement

The Cal State Monterey Bay Library serves a diverse and dynamic community representing a wide range of identities, experiences, perspectives, and beliefs. We are committed to creating an inclusive, welcoming, and intellectually engaging environment where all students, faculty, staff and community members feel respected and supported.

Through our collections, services, programs, and spaces, we foster open dialogue, critical inquiry, and meaningful engagement with diverse viewpoints. The library supports educational excellence and student success by advancing access to knowledge, encouraging curiosity, and empowering individuals to learn, grow and reach their full potential.

Library Diversity Committee

The Library Diversity Committee works to cultivate, strengthen, and advance inclusive and empowering library collections, services, and spaces that support students, staff and faculty.

The Cal State Monterey Bay Library welcomes and supports all members of the campus community. Through its work, the committee helps ensure the library fosters a sense of belonging and provides equitable access to resources that support emotional well-being, social connection, academic success, and professional growth.

The Tanimura & Antle Library Legacy

A Legacy of Partnership

The Tanimura & Antle Family Memorial Library honors the strong partnership between Cal State Monterey Bay and the Tanimura & Antle families. Their generosity helped create a space at the heart of campus where students learn, study and connect.

A $4 million gift from Tanimura & Antle — the largest private donation to the university at the time — made the library possible. Built with sustainability in mind, the LEED Silver-certified building reflects CSUMB’s values of inclusion, innovation and care for the region.

Today, the library is a central gathering place for campus life and a lasting example of what can happen when the university and community partners work together to support student success.

The Cal State Monterey Bay Library recognizes outstanding undergraduate research and creative work through the Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award. This award highlights projects grounded in ethnic studies scholarship that deepen understanding of race, culture, identity, power and social justice.

All Cal State Monterey Bay undergraduate students are encouraged to submit a research paper or creative project informed by research on an ethnic studies topic for consideration for the Tanimura & Antle Library Ethnic Studies Research Paper Award.

Projects may take a variety of forms, including traditional research papers or creative works such as podcasts, digital media or other research-informed formats.
