Library Instruction

Supporting students and faculty through research guidance, instruction and information literacy resources.

Library-Provided Learning Services

The Library helps students and faculty explore ideas, ask questions and succeed in their academic work. Librarians and library resources support learning, teaching and research across all subjects. These services help people find information, use it responsibly and build confidence in their research skills.

Research Support and Instruction

The Library partners with students and faculty to support research at every stage. Through personalized consultations and course-integrated instruction, librarians help build strong research questions, effective search strategies and information-literate practices.

For Students and Faculty

Librarians are available for in-depth research consultations as schedules permit. These one-on-one or small-group sessions provide personalized support for developing research questions, finding and evaluating sources, and navigating library tools.

To connect with a librarian who specializes in your subject area, review the Librarian Subject Selectors list and contact the librarian directly to schedule an appointment.

Librarians partner with faculty to provide course-integrated instruction that supports information literacy and research-based assignments.

Instruction may include:

  • Research strategies tailored to course assignments
  • Evaluating sources and using information ethically
  • Discipline-specific research tools and methods

Faculty who would like to request an instruction session or consultation should contact the librarian specialist for their academic program. Please allow at least two weeks’ notice when requesting in-class instruction.

Information Literacy Instructional Resources

The Library offers a range of instructional resources that faculty can integrate into their courses.

Faculty may recommend or require students to complete the Introduction to the CSUMB Library mini-course, available in Canvas.

  • Self-paced and stand-alone
  • Takes approximately 35 minutes to complete
  • Students receive a certificate of completion

The course covers:

  • Accessing library collections and services
  • Using OneSearch and electronic resources
  • Getting help through Ask a Librarian
