Medical & Prescription Benefits

Eligibility

Benefits are available to regular full-time and part-time employees working 30+ hours/week, as well as eligible dependents including spouses, registered domestic partners, and children up to age 26 (or older if disabled and dependent).

Medical Coverage Options

Employees may choose from multiple Anthem PPO and HMO plans or a Kaiser HMO plan. All plans include comprehensive medical and prescription drug coverage with no medical plan-year deductible for Kaiser members and affordable copays (e.g., $20 for primary care).

Prescription Drug Coverage

All Anthem medical plans now use Navitus for pharmacy benefits (replacing ESI), with affordable generic and brand medication copays and mail-order options. Kaiser plans maintain integrated pharmacy benefits.

Key Plan Changes for 2026

Anthem members will see two updates: Navitus replaces Express Scripts (ESI) for pharmacy benefits, and Digbi replaces Livongo for digital health coaching. Premium rates also change for 2026 plans.

Dental Coverage

UCorp employees have access to dental coverage through Delta Dental, which offers one of the largest networks of providers nationwide.

Plan Highlights

  • Comprehensive coverage for preventive, basic, and major services
  • Access to an extensive PPO network to help lower out-of-pocket costs
  • Orthodontic benefits may be available for eligible dependents

Vision Coverage

Vision benefits are provided through VSP (Vision Service Plan), offering affordable access to eye care and eyewear through a wide national network.

Plan Highlights

  • Eye exam — Once every 12 months with a $20 copay
  • Lenses and frames or contact lenses — Covered once every 12 months
  • TruHearing discount — Savings on hearing aids through VSP’s TruHearing program

UCorp offers a defined contribution retirement plan through TIAA/CREF to support your long-term financial well-being.

Plan Highlights

  • 10% employer contribution — no employee match required
  • Immediate vesting upon eligibility
  • Six-month waiting period from hire date
  • Managed by TIAA (Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association) and CREF (College Retirement Equities Fund)

Eligibility

  • Available to benefited full-time and part-time employees
  • Coverage begins on the first day of the month after completing six months of service

Voluntary Contributions

Employees may choose to make pre-tax or Roth after-tax contributions.

Basic Life and AD&D Insurance

Eligible employees receive $50,000 in life insurance coverage at no cost. This includes Accidental Death and Dismemberment (AD&D) benefits, which provide additional coverage in the event of a qualifying accident.

Optional Life Insurance

Employees can choose to purchase additional voluntary life insurance for:

  • Themselves (beyond the $50,000 basic benefit)
  • Their spouse or registered domestic partner
  • Eligible dependents

Premiums are employee-paid and based on coverage level and age.

Long-Term Disability (LTD)

University Corporation provides automatic LTD coverage at no cost to eligible employees. This plan:

  • Begins after 180 days of continuous disability
  • Offers partial income replacement for qualifying injuries or illnesses (on or off the job)
  • Coordinates with other benefit payments
  • Provides support through age 65 if needed

Unemployment Insurance

If you lose your job through no fault of your own, you may be eligible for weekly unemployment benefits. Contact the California Employment Development Department (EDD) to file a claim and determine eligibility.

Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA)

University Corporation offers Section 125 flexible spending accounts for:

  • Health FSA — Covers eligible medical, dental, and vision expenses
  • Dependent Care FSA — Covers eligible child or elder care costs

Funds are set aside from your paycheck before taxes, reducing your taxable income. You may enroll in one or both accounts, but funds cannot be transferred between them.

Supplemental Insurance

University Corporation offers voluntary supplemental insurance through AFLAC (American Family Life Assurance Company of Columbus).

Plan highlights:

  • Provides cash benefits paid directly to you to help cover expenses from illness, injury, or disability not covered by traditional health insurance
  • Several plan options available, including accident, hospital, and critical illness coverage
  • Premiums can be paid pre-tax or after-tax through payroll deduction
  • Employees are responsible for 100% of the premium cost

Workers’ Compensation

University Corporation provides workers’ compensation coverage for employees who experience a job-related illness or injury.

What to Do if You're Injured at Work

  • Report the incident to your supervisor or University Corporation Human Resources within 24 hours
  • Complete and submit the following forms immediately:
    • DWC1 Employee Claim Form (PDF)
    • Injury/Illness Investigation Report (PDF)
  • Submit forms to: hr_corporation@csumb.edu

Workers’ compensation leave and benefits are granted in accordance with California state law.

Ergonomics Support

We are committed to promoting ergonomic health in both on-campus and remote work settings.

Services available:

  • Individual workstation evaluations
  • Ergonomic training and assessments
  • Remote work setup guidance

University Corporation at Monterey Bay offers a variety of paid and unpaid leave options to support employees through personal, family, and medical needs.

Family and Medical Leave (FML)

Eligible employees may take up to 12 weeks of paid or unpaid leave in a 12-month period under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) and California Family Rights Act (CFRA). Leave may be used to care for:

  • Your own serious health condition
  • A spouse, child, parent, or domestic partner with a serious health condition

Key Details:

  • Available to regular employees with at least one year of service
  • Medical certification is required
  • While on unpaid leave, you may request continued benefits coverage
  • You are guaranteed reinstatement to the same or equivalent position upon return

Note: FML may run concurrently with other types of leave, excluding Pregnancy Disability Leave.

Maternity, Paternity, and Adoption Leave

Employees are entitled to up to five consecutive paid workdays to prepare for and care for a new child.

This leave:

  • Must be taken within 60 days of the child's arrival
  • Is in addition to sick or vacation leave
  • May run concurrently with FML or other eligible leave types

Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL)

Employees disabled due to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions may take up to four months of Pregnancy Disability Leave. This leave is separate from FML.

Leave Without Pay (LWOP)

Eligible employees may request an unpaid personal leave of absence.

Key Requirements:

  • Must have one year of continuous service
  • Must work at least 30 hours per week
  • Employees must notify HR 14 days in advance to arrange benefit premium payments

Other Leave Types

Funeral Leave

Up to 5 paid days for the death of an immediate family member.

Military Leave

Unpaid leave is granted for military service, reserve training, or National Guard duty in accordance with federal and state law.

Jury Duty

Employees are eligible for paid time off for jury service during scheduled work hours.

Sick Leave

Eligible employees accrue sick leave for use during illness, injury recovery, and medical, dental, or vision appointments. Accrual rates vary by employee classification.

Holidays

The Corporation observes 13 full-day holidays per year plus 1 personal holiday. Personal holidays must be used by December 31 each year.

Vacation Leave

Vacation is an accrued benefit available to full-time and part-time benefited employees, subject to manager approval.

University Corporation at Monterey Bay offers discounted pet insurance through Nationwide, providing peace of mind for employees with furry, feathered, or scaly family members.

Plan Highlights

  • Coverage available for accidents and illnesses
  • Eligible pets include dogs, cats, birds, small mammals, and reptiles
    (Livestock and horses are not eligible)
  • Preferred pricing for UCMB employees
  • Coverage typically begins 14 days after approval
  • No Open Enrollment required — enroll anytime

  • Pre-existing conditions are not covered
  • Premiums vary by pet type and location
  • Employees pay premiums directly to Nationwide
  • All enrollment is subject to underwriting approval

The CSUMB Campus Health Center provides high-quality primary and women’s health care. While student-focused, the center is also available to faculty, staff, their dependents, and campus visitors.

  • Dependents of faculty, staff, and students
  • Campus residents and guests

Cellular Phone Discounts

Discounts on personal mobile phone service may be available through major carriers for CSUMB employees. Contact your provider to inquire about available education or state employee rates.
