Dhruv Patel’s journey to success has been anything but traditional. A proud Salinas resident and first-generation student, Dhruv is making a mark at Cal State Monterey Bay as an Accounting major—not only through his academic excellence in accounting but also through his leadership, entrepreneurial spirit, and deep-rooted commitment to his community.

Originally pursuing computer science at Hartnell College, Dhruv’s path shifted dramatically after attending a guest presentation by CSUMB professors Sharon Hua and Gary Schneider. Their passion for accounting sparked something in him. "I came home excited, and my parents immediately saw it," he recalled. Encouraged to explore the field, he enrolled in financial accounting classes—and never looked back. His grades soared, and he found a clear purpose in business and accounting. “I’ve stayed in touch with Professor Hua ever since,” Dhruv shared. “That connection made all the difference.”

Choosing CSUMB was a natural decision. Not only was it close to home, allowing him to stay near his tight-knit family, but it also offered a welcoming, student-centered environment. He also noted, "The strong connection I felt with the professors made choosing CSUMB an easy and exciting decision."

Dhruv’s story, however, began long before his college days. Born in India, he lived there until 2009, when he immigrated to the U.S. to reunite with family who had been in California since the 1980s. Before moving, Dhruv attended a boarding school in India where he learned the values of hard work, discipline, and cultural pride—traits that continue to guide him today.

Before resuming his academic journey, Dhruv took two years to explore different career paths. He managed a chain of sports stores in Fremont and dabbled in event planning, gaining real-world experience and learning what he did—and didn’t—want from a career. “Those two years were essential. They helped me figure out what I was truly passionate about.”

Today, Dhruv balances a full academic schedule with a demanding job managing an extended learning program for the Salinas School District. He oversees operations for 14 elementary schools, a role he earned after excelling in summer programs and building relationships with district leaders—some of whom are CSUMB alumni. “This job has helped shape who I am,” he said. “It’s rewarding and has strengthened my leadership skills.”

Dhruv is also laying the groundwork for a future in entrepreneurship. He founded Meritus Management, a property management startup inspired by his family's experience in the hospitality industry. The name “Meritus” reflects his commitment to excellence, integrity, and community. His vision is to bring friends and fellow CSUMB students into the business, creating opportunities and building a strong, locally driven company. “It’s not just about me or my family,” he explained. “It’s about creating something meaningful for everyone involved.”

At CSUMB, Dhruv has found mentorship, community, and opportunity. He credits professors like Sharon Hua, Gary Schneider, Tasha Parmley, Karen Wisdom, and others for their consistent support and responsiveness. “I’ve never seen faculty like this anywhere else,” he said. He’s also participated in in-class mentoring programs, including a memorable experience with mentor and former Dean Dr. Shyam Kamath. “Those connections opened doors and helped me grow professionally.”

His experience at CSUMB has been so positive that Dhruv urged his younger brother to consider CSUMB over UC Berkeley and UCLA.

Looking ahead, Dhruv plans to graduate in December 2025 and take a year to gain more experience before pursuing an MBA—possibly through CSUMB’s 100% Online MBA program. “My fiancée is finishing her medical degree, and while she completes her residency, it might be the perfect time for me to continue my education.”

In recognition of his leadership, vision, and academic excellence, Dhruv was recently honored with CSUMB’s Future Alumni Award. “It’s been an incredible journey,” he said. “CSUMB has given me the tools, the mentorship, and the confidence to build a future I’m proud of—and I can’t wait for what’s next.”
