Supporting Community Engagement Through Wellness and Self-Care

At Cal State Monterey Bay, service and social responsibility are connected to personal well-being. Community engagement can be meaningful and rewarding, but it can also be emotionally demanding — especially when students work closely with issues related to inequity, trauma or social justice.

That’s why students are encouraged to approach service in sustainable and supportive ways through practices such as:

  • Setting healthy boundaries
  • Building wellness routines
  • Seeking support from peers, mentors and professionals
  • Choosing service experiences that align with personal values and well-being

By combining service with self-care, students can engage more thoughtfully with their communities while supporting their own growth, resilience and long-term well-being.

Social Responsibility, Service and Self-Care

Self-care is the intentional practice of supporting your physical, emotional, social and mental well-being. It helps students stay grounded, avoid burnout and continue showing up for their communities in healthy and sustainable ways.

The Self-Care Workbook, created in collaboration with the Service Learning Institute, Wellness RAFT and Health and Wellness Services, includes reflection activities, wellness tools and planning resources to help students build sustainable self-care practices.

The workbook also includes campus resources organized across multiple wellness areas, including:

  • Emotional wellness
  • Physical wellness
  • Social wellness
  • Spiritual wellness
  • Occupational wellness
  • Intellectual wellness
  • Environmental wellness
  • Financial wellness

These resources help students connect with support services and opportunities that promote both personal and collective care.
