Academic Integrity

Academic integrity is a foundational value at Cal State Monterey Bay. Students and faculty share the responsibility to uphold honesty, trust and ethical behavior in all academic work. Acts of academic dishonesty, such as cheating, fabrication, plagiarism or collusion, undermine the learning environment and will result in appropriate sanctions.

The university’s Academic Integrity Policy outlines expectations for student conduct and provides procedures for addressing violations in accordance with CSU Executive Order 1098.

Faculty Responsibilities

Faculty members play a key role in promoting academic honesty. Instructors are encouraged to:

  • Discuss the importance of academic integrity with students
  • Include a statement about academic integrity in course syllabi
  • Address incidents of dishonesty directly and document them appropriately

Faculty interested in tools to evaluate the originality of student work can explore available options through the Center for Academic Technologies.

Academic integrity is of central importance to an education at CSUMB. The core of this integrity resides in the scholastic honesty of the CSUMB community, and therefore, is the responsibility of all students and faculty to uphold and maintain. Forms of academic dishonesty include: cheating, fabrication, plagiarism, and collusion in any of these activities. We value informal resolution of academic integrity allegations; however, students discovered to have engaged in academic dishonesty will be sanctioned.

Reporting Dishonesty

Instructors who determine that a student has violated the Academic Integrity Policy must complete the Academic Integrity Violation Report Form. This form identifies the student involved, describes the nature of the violation, outlines the action taken by the faculty member and indicates whether further administrative review is recommended.

Completed forms and supporting documentation should be submitted to the Office of Student Conduct.
