The Statistics and Data Science program delivers the knowledge and practical skills in things like experimental design; survey and sampling design; data analysis; data collection; and statistical programming in R, SAS, and Python that transcend across professional fields and disciplines.

 

Educational Objectives

Our closely-knit community of teachers and learners will provide you with a dynamic and collaborative learning environment, with offerings like the Math/Stat Major Lounge where you’ll come together for study sessions with fellow students, as well as the Mathematics and Statistics Club and Mathematics and Statistics Cafes.

Our faculty mentorship and research opportunities will position you to develop advanced real-world skills, to collaborate with other programs and industry partners, and to present your research at local, regional, and national conferences.

Our Mathematics and Statistics Colloquium will enrich your learning experience with up to eight sessions per year, where you’ll explore current and emerging topics, build community with fellow students, connect and network with visiting professionals, and enhance your development as a future statistician.

Our Statistics and Data Science minors can be easily added to any other CSUMB degree program – including Mathematics, Computer Science, Psychology, Kinesiology, Health Sciences, Business, Biology, Marine Science, and Environmental Science – as a way to enhance your skill set and marketability in the job market.

Our location will add a rich dimension to your overall experience in the Statistics and Data Science program, offering opportunities to work with local non-profit organizations through your coursework like Big Sur Land Trust and the Ventana Wilderness Alliance, as well as to conduct independent research benefiting local communities using data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

You’ll engage in a service-learning internship providing statistical consulting services to local non-profit organizations and schools, enabling them to continue providing and enhancing the essential services and education they provide to area families and communities.
