Apply Prior Credits Toward Your Degree

Cal State Monterey Bay values academic work completed at other institutions and offers multiple pathways to apply that credit toward a CSUMB degree. Whether your experience comes from another college, military service or exams such as AP, CLEP or IB, we’re here to help you understand how it transfers.

CSUMB Students in a Class
Course Equivalences

Articulation agreements outline how courses from other colleges apply to degree requirements at CSUMB. These formal agreements are especially common between California community colleges and CSU campuses.

To explore course equivalencies and major preparation, visit ASSIST.org, California’s official articulation database.

Course Credit from Other Institutions

Cal State Monterey Bay grants credit for baccalaureate-level coursework completed at regionally accredited two-year and four-year institutions. Transferable courses are evaluated based on their alignment with General Education and degree requirements.

Undergraduate students may receive up to 70 semester units of transferable credit from a two-year institution. If more than 70 units have been completed, the Transfer Credit Report in OASIS will reflect an adjustment. Upper-division credit is not granted for coursework completed at two-year institutions.

There is no limit on the number of transferable units from four-year institutions. All baccalaureate-level transferable coursework is included in the overall grade point average, and transferable courses that apply to the major are included in the major grade point average.

Credit by Exam

College credit may also be earned through approved external exams, including:

  • Advanced Placement (AP)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB)
  • College-Level Examination Program (CLEP)

These exams may fulfill General Education, major, or U.S. History, Constitution and American Ideals requirements. Your OASIS Transfer Credit Report will show how exam scores apply to your student record.

Refer to the Credit By Exam page for details about minimum scores, credit awarded and/or applicable areas.

Military Credit

Cal State Monterey Bay may award credit for military training and experience based on recommendations from the American Council on Education and internal evaluation. Credit granted may vary by student. Students should submit their Joint Services Transcript (JST) for credit review. Details are available in the Systemwide Credit for Prior Learning Policy (EO 1036).

Nursing NCLEX Examination Credit

Nursing students may receive up to 30 units of credit based on successful completion of the NCLEX exam. Credit is awarded for required pre-licensure coursework not already given equivalent degree credit. Duplicate credit is not granted. Each case is reviewed individually, and all awards require department approval.

Details are available in the Systemwide Nursing Policy (EO 1084).

Credit for Prior Learning

Credit for prior learning recognizes college-level knowledge or skills gained outside the classroom. Undergraduate students may request an assessment for prior learning credit; however, availability for review may vary by department and term. Students are encouraged to consult their department office well in advance to determine eligibility and timelines.

More information is available in the Systemwide Credit for Prior Learning Policy (EO 1036).
