Services and Fees

Providing a vital service and promoting literacy throughout our region.

Mentor and a student

Win… win. When it comes to the vibrant and engaging services at the Center for Reading Diagnosis and Instruction, there’s no better way to describe our impact than a win/win for everyone.

For CSUMB students in the Department of Education, they gain invaluable training experience to work closely with faculty and hone their skills as future educators by working with real-world clients.

For local and regional families, they get effective reading assessment and intervention services that have a very real impact on their young students.

Specialists Who Care, Services That Inspire

The Reading Center functions as a center for reading assessment, instruction, research and professional development related to reading and literacy development. We work with students from kindergarten to high school, with a focus on middle school and elementary school readers. Things to know about the Center include:

  • The program runs in the fall, spring and summer semesters, with all interventionists being CSUMB graduate and undergraduate students.
  • The Center is open two days a week offering one-hour sessions, with one-on-one or small group instruction.
  • All assessments and interventions are designed by the Center’s Reading Specialist, utilizing evidence-based strategies and curriculum.
  • Individualized goals are developed specifically for your child, and we provide ongoing progress monitoring of growth and performance.
  • On-site and Zoom instruction options are available for your convenience.

“The big role for the Center is serving the local community to help struggling readers. It all comes down to helping kids learn to read.”

Scott W. Ross, Director

Promoting Literacy for Schools and Community Organizations

The Center for Reading Diagnosis and Instruction is self-sustaining and serves as a stepping-stone and training ground for future teachers and school psychologists. Our approximately 40 teachers and interventionists provide engaging and caring instruction and support for every student and family that walks through our doors.

Build your child's reading skills through individual and small group instruction

  1. Click the "sign up" link below to get on our waiting list.
  2. When a spot is available, we will reach out to you and have you fill out an application for services, where you can indicate your preferred days and times for instruction.
  3. Once the application is completed, we will schedule an initial assessment to determine the ideal curriculum and intervention strategies needed for your student.
  4. Intervention: If your child qualifies, they will begin instruction that best meets their needs.

The Reading Specialist will determine the evidence-based interventions that meet your child's strengths and needs.

Fall and Spring and Summer sessions are aligned with the CSUMB semesters. When you sign up for these sessions, your child comes for one hour, two days a week. Summer sessions run from mid-June through July.

We do everything we can to keep our prices as low as possible for our families. Currently, families must pay for services for the entire semester, which includes 26 sessions across 14 weeks Fall and Spring; or 14 sessions for Summer.

Our current fees for group and individual sessions is $40, which totals $1,040 across the full 26-session semester, or $560 for Summer.

We do have scholarships available during the fall and spring for those demonstrating financial need, which reduces semester fees significantly.

Here are some frequently asked questions about the Center that may provide you with more information you’re looking for.

What do I do while my child is working with the tutor? - Parents can relax in our waiting area, explore the campus, or run a quick errand.

Can I attend the tutoring session with my child? - The Reading Center encourages parents to observe the tutoring session casually from our waiting area, although direct involvement during the session is not recommended.

How can I share the information learned about my child's reading with my child's teacher? - The Reading Center is here to help your child's teacher by providing the parent with supplemental information to share with the child's school/agency to help guide instruction.

Can I enroll my student without the assessment component? - The assessment is crucial for our Reading Specialist to plan instruction, so the assessment component is not optional unless sufficient alternate assessments are provided.

Can my child do his/her homework at the Reading Center? - Our instructional session does not allow additional time to help with homework, but we will offer support strategies for families and students if requested.

A beautiful sunset casts a golden glow over campus buildings and trees, with flags waving gently in the evening breeze.
