HCOM Major Requirements
The Humanities and Communication (HCOM) major includes a set of core requirements designed to build the practical, theoretical, and creative tools students need to succeed in upper-division coursework and complete the degree with confidence.
Core Courses
HCOM core courses provide a foundation in ethical and effective communication, social and cultural analysis, engaged creative practice, and humanistic inquiry. Together, these courses support student success across concentrations and prepare students for advanced work in the major.
Major ProSeminar (HCOM 300)
Before formal admission to the Humanities and Communication major, students must successfully complete HCOM 300: Major ProSeminar. Transfer students entering the major should have completed lower-division General Education requirements at their previous institution when possible.
The Major ProSeminar is designed to help students:
-
Develop the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in upper-division HCOM coursework
-
Understand the disciplinary and interdisciplinary approaches that shape the major
-
Create an Individual Learning Plan and select a concentration
-
Build learning communities that support mentoring and connection
-
Explore continuing education, professional opportunities, and career pathways
Research or Theory Intensive Requirement (RTI)
Students complete one approved concentration course designated as Research or Theory Intensive (RTI). Students considering graduate school are encouraged to take additional RTI courses when possible.
RTI courses strengthen students’ ability to research, analyze, and communicate complex ideas using disciplinary and interdisciplinary methods.
Research Methods Outcomes
In courses designated as Research Intensive, students learn to:
-
Identify and explain common research methods used in HCOM-related disciplines
-
Apply appropriate research method(s) to an inquiry-based project in ethical and effective ways
-
Interpret and analyze evidence to draw conclusions related to focused research questions
-
Communicate research findings clearly and ethically
Theory Intensive Outcomes
In courses designated as Theory Intensive, students learn to:
-
Identify and explain analytical theories and frameworks used in humanities and communication studies
-
Apply theoretical analysis to a significant question or problem
-
Communicate the rationale for and results of theoretical analysis clearly and ethically
Senior Capstone (HCOM 475)
All HCOM majors must complete HCOM 475: Senior Capstone. Certification in Senior Capstone is required for graduation. In capstone, students participate in a seminar organized around a shared theme and complete a substantial final project (either a research-driven essay or a creative work) developed with faculty guidance.
For more details, visit the Capstone Experience page.
For the Most Accurate Requirements
Degree requirements may vary by catalog year. Students should consult the CSUMB catalog and meet with an Academic Advisor or HCOM Academic Advisor, Nongnenj Vang to confirm requirements for their specific pathway.
