Robert Darwin Black Box Cabaret
A reimagined performance space honoring Robert Darwin’s legacy and strengthening the performing arts at Cal State Monterey Bay and throughout the Monterey region.
Robert Darwin was a writer, businessman, actor, filmmaker, photographer, pilot and longtime resident of Carmel Valley. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II and beginning his career in Hollywood, he returned to the Monterey Peninsula in 1967, where he pursued successful business ventures, raised thoroughbred horses and authored several books and memoirs.
A dedicated supporter of Cal State Monterey Bay, Darwin made generous contributions to advance opportunities for students in Monterey County and beyond. In recognition of his philanthropy, Cal State Monterey Bay awarded him an honorary doctorate in 2023. Following his passing, his legacy gift became the largest in university history, funding scholarships and initiating renovations to the Black Box Cabaret.
With Robert Darwin as its lead funder, this project marks an exciting step forward in our commitment to strengthening the performing arts on campus and throughout the Monterey region. Through the thoughtful construction of an updated facility, we aim to create a versatile venue for indoor and outdoor performances that meets the evolving needs of our growing academic and student engagement programs.
The space will be a high-quality, acoustically distinctive venue unlike any other in the county while honoring a location of historical significance to our university.
The Robert Darwin Black Box Cabaret will be a state-of-the-art performance space designed to reflect Darwin’s artistic vision, spirit of innovation and deep love of the arts. It will continue to support the mission of educating first-generation students and the broader student body about the transformative power and cultural importance of theater, the arts and live performance.
Add your story to the record
Before the next chapter begins, help us remember the ones that came before.
The Black Box Cabaret has always been more than four walls. It’s been filled with music, performances, celebrations, gatherings and friendships built over a shared panini or coffee. But it’s really about the people who made those moments unforgettable.
As we prepare to relaunch this beloved space, we’re honoring its history with a one-of-a-kind donor wall made from records and CDs — a tribute to the sounds, stories and memories that have flourished in this building.
The history is already here.
Help us keep it spinning at the Robert Darwin Black Box Cabaret.
