From Cerritos to NASA: How an MBA Opened New Doors for Rudy Ruano

Rudy Ruano expects to receive his MBA degree in fall 2025.
April 3, 2025
When Rudy Ruano began his academic journey in Cerritos, California, he never imagined that it would one day lead him to NASA. With a foundation in criminal justice and public administration, Rudy’s path took a pivotal turn when he enrolled in the Online MBA program at Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB)—a decision that would expand his career possibilities and launch him into a new phase of professional growth.
A Foundation in Public Service
Rudy earned his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice at Cal State Fullerton, where he later completed a master’s in public administration. Those degrees laid the groundwork for a meaningful career in local government, with positions at a small city office, the City of Los Angeles, and eventually the Export-Import Bank of the United States. These roles allowed him to contribute to public service while honing his administrative and leadership skills.

From Local Government to NASA
Rudy’s move into the federal government eventually led him to an exciting opportunity at NASA, where he now works as a Human Resources Operations Specialist. Interestingly, it was his enrollment in CSUMB’s Online MBA program that played a key role in securing the job.
"A degree in Business Administration was one of the main qualifications for the job," Rudy explained. "Just listing that I was in progress in the program opened up opportunities I didn’t expect."
His graduate-level education also qualified him to start at a higher GS-9 pay level, compared to GS-6, making the investment in an MBA even more valuable.
Choosing CSUMB’s MBA Program
When searching for an MBA program, Rudy explored several CSU and UC campuses, including Fullerton, Northridge, and UCLA. However, the in-person and hybrid formats of those programs posed logistical challenges for a full-time working professional. CSUMB’s fully online structure, however, made it an ideal fit.
"The program is designed with working professionals in mind," Rudy said. "Being [fully] online made it easier to balance my job, personal life, and academic goals."
Practical Learning with Real-World Impact
One of the highlights of the program for Rudy has been its focus on practical, real-world application. In his Supply Chain Management course, for example, students participated in detailed simulations that mirrored real business challenges.
"It wasn’t just about [studying] theories," Rudy explained. "We used simulations to apply those theories—like making monthly decisions to meet revenue targets, adjusting strategy in response to changing variables, and forecasting outcomes based on data. It was challenging and eye-opening."
Building a Professional Network Online
Despite being fully online, Rudy found the program highly collaborative. From day one, students connected through introductions and group chats, forming bonds that carried through the program.
"We still share job opportunities and support each other," Rudy said. "The sense of community is strong, even virtually."
Supportive and Accessible Faculty
Rudy praised CSUMB’s faculty for being exceptionally kind, patient, and available. "The professors understand we’re working professionals. They’re flexible when needed and genuinely want you to succeed," he said. "Some even provided their personal cell numbers so we could reach them more easily."
This flexibility, Rudy noted, allowed him to focus on doing his best work without unnecessary stress. "Knowing I had support made me want to work harder," he added.
MBA as a Career Catalyst
Rudy emphasized how just being enrolled in the MBA program made a difference. "Employers immediately asked about it," he said. "It became a conversation starter and a credential that opened doors."
He believes three aspects make CSUMB’s Online MBA especially relevant: its practical focus, the accelerated timeline, and the value of AACSB Business Alliance membership. "People care about accreditation and time-to-degree," he noted.
Looking Ahead
As Rudy prepares to graduate in fall 2025, he’s looking forward to participating in CSUMB’s MBA graduation celebration in May. "It’ll be great to meet classmates and faculty in person," he said. "And it’s a good excuse to spend a weekend in Monterey."
Rudy’s story is a testament to how the right program—one that values flexibility, practical learning, and strong support—can change a professional’s path. From local government to one of the most prestigious institutions in the world, Rudy is proof that with the right tools, the sky isn’t the limit—it’s just the beginning.
