December 4, 2024
Dr. Xiaotong (Cate) Liu, Assistant Professor in the BSBA Agribusiness concentration, recently graduated from the 2024 AgKnowledge Program, Class XVI. This intensive nine-month program, led by The Grower-Shipper Foundation and supported by the Monterey County Agricultural Commissioner, provides an in-depth look at Monterey County’s agriculture sector, revealing the region's critical role as the “Salad Bowl of the World.” The Salinas Valley not only drives the local economy but also plays an essential part in promoting public wellness by supplying fresh, nutritious produce to communities worldwide.
Through AgKnowledge, Dr. Liu toured leading Ag businesses like Taylor Farms, Braga Farms, Monterey Mushrooms, Driscoll’s, Scheid Vineyards, and Delicato Family Vineyards. These experiences highlighted the value of supply chain management in ensuring efficient production, distribution, and quality control in agribusiness. From field to table, each step in the supply chain must be carefully managed to maintain the freshness and nutritional quality of produce, reinforcing the impact of local agribusiness on global food security and wellness.
Dr. Liu is committed to incorporating these real-world insights into her teachings, equipping students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in Agribusiness Supply Chain Management (ASCM). By connecting students with local agricultural operations and emphasizing supply chain resilience and efficiency, Dr. Liu aims to prepare future professionals to support the economic vitality of Monterey County and contribute to the wellness of communities far beyond. Her goal is to inspire students to recognize that careers in supply chain management are not only economically impactful but also essential to sustaining a healthy society.
Why this is important: Dr. Liu’s participation in AgKnowledge emphasizes the College of Business’s commitment to fostering local talent and student success. By linking academic learning with Monterey County’s agricultural practices, she empowers students to pursue careers that balance economic growth with wellness outcomes. Dr. Liu invites students and community members to appreciate the profound impact of supply chain management in agribusiness, ensuring that the “Salad Bowl of the World” continues to thrive as a cornerstone of health and sustainability.
