Dr. Jenny Lin Shares Research and Teaching Insights at CSUMB Workshop for Junior Faculty

Dr. Jenny Lin, Associate Professor of Marketing at Cal State Monterey Bay (CSUMB) and Fulbright Scholar, is a distinguished educator and researcher known for her impactful work in marketing and pedagogy. With a Ph.D. in Marketing and interdisciplinary backgrounds in biomedical science, veterinary medicine, and business, Dr. Lin's expertise spans consumer behavior, sensory decision-making, and pedagogical research. She has earned several notable awards recognizing her dedication to research and mentorship, including the CSUMB Faculty Award for Excellence in Discovery, Creation, and Integration (2019) and the CSUMB Academic Senate Faculty Award for Outstanding Mentor (2023 & 2024). Dr. Lin also serves as the Academic Director of CSUMB’s MBA Program, highlighting her commitment to academic leadership.
Dr. Lin was invited to share her insights as part of a November 18th Teaching, Learning, and Assessment (TLA) COOP workshop titled "Pedagogy, Scholarship, and Career Development," co-facilitated by Dr. Rixing (Tess) Lou, Dr. Choonghyoung (Alexis) Lee, and Dr. Xiaotong (Cate) Liu. Dr. Lin presented “Publishing Pedagogical and Interdisciplinary Research: Tips for Junior Faculty in Research and Teaching,” offering junior faculty practical advice on balancing research with teaching.
In addition to sharing her expertise on publishing and interdisciplinary collaboration, Dr. Lin guided junior faculty through practical strategies drawn from her multi-project experience, including case studies, pre- and post-design approaches, and subjective assessments. These strategies demonstrated how faculty could align their efforts to meet multiple categories under RTP—teaching, research, and service—ensuring a well-rounded academic profile.
Dr. Lin covered essential topics, including:
- Publishing Pedagogical Research: Approaches for integrating teaching practices with scholarly pursuits;
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Strategies to foster cross-disciplinary partnerships;
- Balancing Teaching and Research: Practical insights on time management and productivity;
- Mentorship and Networking: Building impactful relationships with colleagues and students.
Her presentation provided junior faculty with actionable strategies for building research pipelines, achieving professional growth, and excelling in multiple RTP categories. It was a highly beneficial session for CSUMB’s junior faculty.

Smokey is a Business major with a dual concentration in International Business & Management and Information Systems. She is the Vice President of Native American Students United, the former President of the Business Technology Club, and the former Secretary for the OSU Board of Directors. She currently interns at TMI Data Inc in Monterey as an IT Administration Assistant and works as a student assistant for the College of Business.

College of Business Students in Undergraduate Research – Congratulations to Eduardo Aparicio, along with his mentor Dr. Shwadhin Sharma, who recently published a research article titled “Organizational and team culture as antecedents of protection motivation among IT employees” in the Computers & Security (an A-rated journal on the ABDC list and has an impact factor of 4.43). August 21, 2022 - Pebble Beach SEMT gets hands-on experience at Concours d’Elegance – Thank you to the world-renowned Pebble Beach Company for allowing students from CSUMB’s Sustainable Hospitality Management program and the College of Business the opportunity to showcase their skills while managing a hospitality team at Concours d’Elegance on August 21st. As Hospitality Managers for the Pebble Beach Special Event Management Team (SEMT), students worked directly with Pebble Beach representatives to manage, plan, coordinate, and oversee hospitality areas at the finest exhibition of show cars in the world.

The College of Business is featured in the "Beyond the Ordinary" article series highlighted in the CSUMB-Now newsletter. An average of 14.5 percent of all CSUMB students enroll in the business school each year, and business administration is the most popular undergraduate major at the university.
First UROC McNair Scholars to represent the College of Business
Congratulations to Saray Garcia and Angelica May Amita, for their contributions to the McNair Scholars Program this year, alongside mentors Dr. Angeline Nariswari and Dr. Jenny Lin. The McNair Scholars Program supports first-generation college students by promoting undergraduate research excellence and preparing academically talented students for future doctoral studies. The vision of this program is to make the world a better place by encouraging the inclusion of underrepresented perspectives in business academia. Saray Garcia, who joined in Spring 2020, and Angelica, who joined in Spring 2021, are among the first two students at the College of Business to be a part of this program.

Congratulations to Spring 2022 COB graduating seniors Khushi Desai and Saray Garcia on their acceptance to UC Irvine graduate school programs!
Khushi Desai, BSBA '22, accepted a fellowship for the prestigious Master of Science in Business Analytics program at the Paul Merage School of Business, University of California, Irvine. Khushi graduated CUM LAUDE this spring with a BS in Business Administration, concentrating in Information Systems. In addition to achieving academic excellence, she has worked as a student assistant for the College of Business since March 2021, working on AACSB data-related projects. She will continue in her position through August before heading off for grad school. Congratulations, Khushi!
Saray Garcia, BSBA '22, was accepted into UC Irvine's Organizational Behavior PhD Program! Saray's program is fully-funded, and she was also awarded the Graduate Opportunity Fellowship. Saray began researching topics related to sustainability and CSR in the summer of 2020 with mentors Dr. Jenny Lin and Dr. Ange Nariswari. She worked as a Diversity & Inclusion Event Support Intern with Associated Students, as well as an assistant for the Education Opportunity Program at CSUMB. In her senior year, Saray served as Vice President of the Entrepreneurship Club, where she helped her team win second place at Startup Weekend. Saray looks forward to joining the UC Competitive Edge Program in August to get acquainted with the rest of her research cohort and is also looking forward to studying and conducting research in Mexico. Congratulations, Saray!

College of Business Students Take 2nd Place at Startup Weekend
January 30, 2022 – Congratulations to Business students, Smokey Heisey (Information Systems) and Saray Garcia (Management & International Business). Their team of five students (four from CSUMB and one from Hartnell) won 2nd Place in the Startup Weekend, held Jan 28-30. Their business idea was for a product called Footprint, a free simulation tool providing customers the ability to quantify the carbon footprint of their investment portfolio. November 30, 2021: Dr. Jenny Kuan spoke on a discussion panel hosted by the Building Community Through Dialogue Co-op at CSUMB at: “Keeping it Real: Affirming the Asian American Community, Building Bridges, and Making Connections.” The discussion informed audience members of the disturbing discrimination against the Asian community and challenged viewers to learn how to support the AAPI community.

Dillon Herrick named CSUMB’s recipient of CSU 2021 Trustees' Award
September 17, 2021: The California State University selected 23 of its students, one from each CSU campus, for its 2021 Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement, the system’s highest recognition for students.
CSUMB’s recipient is Dillon Herrick, a senior majoring in business administration with a concentration in accounting. He and the other recipients were recognized in a virtual ceremony at the Board of Trustees virtual meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 14. Read the full article by Walter Ryce.
