Latin American Studies, Minor

Educational Objectives

The Latin American Studies Minor develops interdisciplinary knowledge of the historical processes, cultures, social structures, politics and economies that shape contemporary Latin American societies.

Through the program, you will develop the ability to:

• Describe and critically examine major historical processes, cultural values and social structures that characterize contemporary Latin American societies, including forms of racial, ethnic, gender and social inequality.
• Read and converse about Latin American affairs with proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese and develop an appreciation for Latin American literature.
• Examine the historical, social, political and economic conditions that have shaped contemporary Latin American societies and their relationships with the United States and other parts of the world.
• Collect, analyze and evaluate information about Latin America using interdisciplinary approaches, including historical, sociological, economic, political and literary methods.

The minor also encourages students to deepen their understanding through study or travel in Latin America before graduation.
