Hispanic Cultures & History, Minor
While the minor offers the knowledge and skills that will complement virtually any major, it’s particularly well-suited for those studying human communication, social and behavioral sciences, the arts, liberal studies, business, and health and human services.
Educational Objectives
Our emphasis cultural knowledge will prepare you to provide comparative descriptions and basic analyses of the peoples, history, and culture of the Spanish-speaking world.
Our current, relevant curriculum will engage you in the learning of customs, practices, products, and perspectives that will uniquely prepare you for effective cross-cultural communication.
Our integration of historical perspectives will equip you with the essential theoretical foundation of the diverse peoples and histories of Spanish-speaking communities over a significant time period.
Complete one of the following literature-based courses:
- SPAN 362 - Latin American Literature in Translation Units: 3
- SPAN 365 - The Chicano Narrative Units: 3
Complete one of the following history/culture-based courses:
- SPAN 307 - History and Culture of Mexico Units: 4
- SPAN 308 - Hist/Cultr Aztlan:SW US Units: 4
- SPAN 309 - Hist & Polit Of Latn Amer Units: 4
- SPAN 325 - Hispanic Cinema Units: 4
- SPAN 370 - The Chicanx Community Units: 3
Complete two additional history/culture courses from the list above (not previously taken) or complete one history/culture course from the list above (not previously taken) and one course from the following list:

CSUMB's Hector Dionicio Mendoza has enjoyed success with his art and with teaching.
