The Creative Writing & Social Action minor offers a distinctive integration of two important and impactful areas of study, where you’ll nurture your passion for writing fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, and life stories while learning how the written word can be a powerful vehicle for advancing social causes.

The minor will position you to explore your interests in creative writing and social action and enhance your major through the development of valuable creative, critical thinking, visual, and cultural analysis tools that can be applied across disciplines.
Educational Objectives
Our exceptional faculty is comprised of accomplished writers who will individually guide you in the development of your own portfolio of work which you’ll present at the Senior Capstone Festival.
Our focus on connecting writing with broader social issues offers a distinctive approach in higher education that has been used as a model for other universities throughout California.
Our literary journal In the Ords will offer you the opportunity to edit works that are submitted by writers from across the country, further developing your writing and editing skills.
Our integration of social action with creative writing will position you to use your creative skills to actively respond to public issues as well as enrich your service-learning activities that may be part of your major.
