CSUMB’s Centers and Institutes strive every day to help students sharpen their interests and hone their skills. Many of our centers and institutes are offered in coordination with a CSUMB college or school.

Colleges, Schools and Departments

Center for Reading Diagnosis and Instruction

The Reading Center is a training site for pre-service students enrolled programs within the Department of Education and Leadership, and provides reading diagnostic and tutorial services to students from kindergarten to high school.

The Center works with more than 100 families every semester.

Institute for Innovation and Economic Development

The iiED focuses on supporting students, many of whom are first-generation and low-income students, by providing career access programs, internships, mentorship and entrepreneurship initiatives.

Realizing Potential

The iiED has created over 600 jobs for our students, and our alums have gone on to start more than 300 companies.

Clinic for Educational Supports

The Clinic for Educational Supports provides affordable psychoeducational assessment services and speech language services for children and adults of all ages.

Monterey Institute for English Learners

The Monterey Institute for English Learners (MIEL) promotes equitable and effective practices for educators serving English Learners in the greater Monterey County area.

Supporting Our Region

Of the almost 80,000 students in the County, almost 40 percent are classified as English Learners and 70 percent of students are identified as economically disadvantaged.

Caring, Supportive Faculty

Our director, Dr. Suzanne Garcia, has conducted extensive research examining the intersection of race, language, ethnicity, and class in the two-way dual language classroom.

Institute for Community Collaborative Studies

The Institute for Community Collaborative Studies provides consultation, technical assistance, applied research, evaluation and professional training for public health and human services agencies and nonprofit organizations.

Experience and Expertise

The Institute’s director, Kim Judson (MPA, DrPH) has over 30 years of experience providing technical assistance and training for public health agencies and private non-profit organizations.

Impacting Our Region

The Institute’s mission is to contribute to the development of excellence in health and human services practice by providing consultation, technical assistance, applied research, evaluation and professional training.

Institute for the Computing Talent Initiative

The main goal of the Institute for the Computing Talent Initiative is to increase the size and diversity of the computer science talent pool, as well as ensure more students - particularly low-income, first generation, and URM - have viable opportunities.
