TRIO Summer Academy
The TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Summer Academy is a transitional program designed to help incoming first-year and transfer students begin their journey at Cal State Monterey Bay with confidence and connection.
Before the fall semester begins, students move into their campus housing early and spend five to six immersive days building the skills, knowledge and community they need to thrive.
Through Summer Academy, students will:
-
Explore campus resources and gain a clear understanding of university expectations
-
Build meaningful connections with peers and develop a strong support network
-
Strengthen independent living skills and personal responsibility
-
Prepare for the academic rigor of college-level coursework
-
Set personal, academic and career goals for a successful first year
True to TRIO’s commitment to access and equity, all program expenses are covered, including housing and meals.
Participation in Summer Academy is not required to be part of TRIO SSS but the program is strongly recommended for first-time freshmen.
This was such a good experience... it really eased the transition tenseness and anxiety, and gave me a sense of identity and community.
Application Process
There is no separate application for Summer Academy.
Students are asked about their interest during the TRIO interview.
After acceptance into TRIO, students receive additional information about Summer Academy (if registration remains open).
Space Availability
Space is limited.
Due to budget constraints, campus deadlines and a commitment to maintaining a high-quality experience, not all eligible students can participate. Registration remains open as long as space allows.
The program typically closes in mid- to late July.
Attendance Expectations
Full participation is required for all accepted students.
- Students attend all scheduled days (typically 8:30 a.m.–7 or 8 p.m.).
- Breaks are built into the schedule.
- Limited accommodations may be available — contact TRIO staff to discuss individual needs.
Commuter Students
While housing is provided for residential participants, commuter students may travel to and from campus each day. Parking assistance is available as needed to help ensure a smooth and accessible experience.
Supporter Welcome Session
Parents, family members and partners are invited to attend a Welcome Session to:
- Learn about TRIO
- Understand how to support their student
After the session, supporters depart so students can begin building community. Remaining activities are for TRIO participants only.
