Rights and Responsibilities

Student Rights

  • Equal access and opportunities while maintaining academic standards.
  • Timely and thoroughly implemented accommodations.
  • The student’s disability-related information is submitted in confidence to SDAC. It is not released to others without the student's written permission.

Student Responsibilities

  • To receive timely accommodations, students are responsible for making an appointment with SDAC prior to the start of each semester and/or promptly after determining a need for accommodations throughout the semester.
  • Students are responsible for requesting an appointment to meet with each of their faculty members to discuss their authorized accommodations, as detailed in an email from SDAC to the student and faculty outlining the student’s specific and individualized accommodations for the current semester.
  • The student is responsible for following all SDAC procedures and meeting its timelines, communicating with their faculty and advisors to confirm accommodations, and scheduling appointments for clarification or extra support.

Student Information

CSUMB, in collaboration with Student Disability and Accessibility Center (SDAC), strives to create a campus that is inclusive and accessible to all eligible students.  We take concerns brought to our attention seriously.

If you feel that your approved accommodations are not being met by an academic department or housing, or if you encounter an accessibility issue on campus, please contact sdac@csumb.edu or (831) 582-3672. We will respond within three business days to discuss your concern.

Employment Issues

Students, student assistants, and employees who believe they have been a victim of unlawful discrimination may contact the Title IX/Discrimination, Harassment, and Retaliation office.

Or contact Human Resources.

Building Access Concerns

Employees, students, and visitors may report building access issues directly by submitting a Work Request.

This includes concerns about doors that are difficult to open or navigate.  A work request to Facilities may result in an adjustment to the door tension or the replacement of a fire door with a door that has adjustable tension.

Students may also inform the Student Disability and Accessibility Center at sdac@csumb.edu, which may arrange programmatic access until the door is adjusted.

Student Disability and Accessibility Center (SDAC) Unable to Accommodate Concerns

Not all requests to SDAC may be approved if they are unreasonable or cause a fundamental alteration to the course's learning outcomes.  When issuing an Unable to Accommodate decision, SDAC will clearly state the reasons and will provide the student with further actions for reconsideration.

If an accommodation is not authorized by SDAC and students wish to confirm its ineligibility, please contact SDAC at (831)582-3672 or sdac@csumb.edu.

Students should be prepared to review details of the timely and required documentation with the SDAC Advisor or Director.

Any final determination regarding the denial of an accommodation remains with SDAC. If students believe that their disability-related needs are not being met due to unlawful discrimination, they may contact Title IX.

The California State University does not discriminate on the basis of disability in its programs and activities, including admission and access. Federal and state laws, including sections 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, prohibit such discrimination.

If you are not satisfied with the resolution made by the campus or wish to explore an external agency, there are additional options for filing a complaint.

Faculty Information

Faculty are not required to accommodate disability-related requests without confirmation from SDAC. For additional information related to faculty rights and responsibilities, visit Faculty Resources.

Cal State Monterey Bay is required to provide students with appropriate accommodations and services that are necessary to afford individuals with disabilities an equal opportunity to participate in school programs. However, the University is not required to make adjustments or provide aids or services that would result in a fundamental alteration of the University’s academic program or impose an undue burden. For more information, visit the Fundamental Alteration Process webpage.
