First Year Seminar

Build confidence, explore your future, and connect with the CSUMB community.

Welcome to First Year Seminar

First Year Seminar (FYS) is more than a class — it’s your launchpad into the Cal State Monterey Bay experience. Designed for all incoming first-time students, FYS supports your transition to college through self-exploration, community engagement, and academic discovery.

As part of CSUMB’s commitment to a student-centered experience, FYS introduces you to:

  • The campus and Monterey Bay community
  • CSUMB’s inclusive, interdisciplinary academic approach
  • Tools to explore your identity, interests, and future direction

You'll join a supportive learning environment where you’ll reflect on your journey, explore your options, and chart your next steps — all while connecting with fellow Otters.
