CSUMB’s RAFT Weekend is filled with activity

The events are anchored by Monte's 5K, Black Box Cabaret launch, and RAFT Carnival

Ever seen an otter run? How about a whole bunch of them?

On Saturday, Oct. 10, the fourth annual Monte’s 5K will draw hundreds of students, alumni and members of both the university and local communities.

The fun run/walk/roll, which starts at 9 a.m. in front of the Otter Student Union, is the centerpiece of Cal State Monterey Bay’s RAFT Weekend and gives participants not only a chance to dust off their sneakers, but also get a tour of the campus as they wind their way along the course. For those needing a more moderate outing, there is also a 1K walk.

This year, the route will pass the soon-to-be-renovated Robert Darwin Black Box Cabaret. Runners and others are invited to attend the launch of construction on the building. Once open, it will host theater, music and other events.

One might think that celebrating the renovation launch and running a 5K might be enough. But no. Starting at 10 a.m., the main quad will host MB Madness, with live music, performances, games, food vendors and student-led competitions. The activities run until 2 p.m.

RAFT Weekend is traditionally an opportunity for alumni to reconnect with CSUMB, but there are plenty of opportunities for others to engage as well.

Beginning on Thursday evening, students can slap on a set of wheels and roller skate in the Kelp Bed, the home of the Otters basketball and volleyball teams. The event runs from 8 p.m. to midnight.

The always popular Werk Witch Drag Show takes the OSU Ballroom stage from 7 to 9:30 p.m. on Friday, when local drag performers will compete for the title of Mx. Werk Witch. This is an inclusive drag show. Drag queens, kings, and everyone in between are encouraged to participate. The event is open to all.

Mountain bike rides, photo portrait sessions for graduates, alumni and families, and a softball tournament are part of the mix of activities during the four-day celebration.

Sunday is highlighted by the RAFT Brunch from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the OSU Ballroom. Complementary food and refreshments are provided and the event is open to everyone.  Registration required.
