Departments must coordinate with Academic Personnel and Human Resources for approval to recruit, advertise and hire. All tenure-line positions must be posted through CSU’s recruitment system and comply with equal employment opportunity (EEO) requirements.

Substitute Faculty Assignments
Substitute faculty assignments are governed by the CFA/CSU Collective Bargaining Agreement, Article 20.8. These temporary appointments cover short-term absences of up to 20 days, such as emergency leave, jury duty or bereavement.
Assignments lasting longer than 20 days typically require a workload adjustment or alternate classification. Faculty may decline an assignment for compelling reasons, and brief voluntary substitutions between colleagues are allowed with department chair approval.
Steps to Assign a Substitute
- Confirm the assignment will last 20 days or less; contact Academic Personnel for longer-term needs.
- If appropriate, arrange short-term voluntary coverage with chair approval.
- Complete and route the Substitute Faculty Assignment Form for approval.
- After work is performed, submit an Hourly Intermittent Voucher each month for payment.
