Child Development Center

Cal State Monterey Bay partners with Early Development Services (EDS) to provide licensed, high-quality and affordable childcare for the campus community. The center supports student parents first, followed by staff, faculty and community families.

EDS is a National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) accredited provider with deep roots in the local community and a strong commitment to early childhood education.

The University Corporation oversees the center’s facilities and compliance to ensure a safe and well-maintained environment.

About the Center

  • Licensed capacity for 48 children
  • Open year-round (with scheduled holidays and professional development closures)
  • Developmentally appropriate classrooms designed to encourage independence and choice
  • Daily opportunities for art, music, books, block play, puzzles, manipulatives and outdoor exploration

Children participate in both large- and small-group activities tailored to their age and developmental stage.

Program Details

The infant room serves up to 12 children.

The program emphasizes:

  • Close, caring relationships with a primary caregiver
  • Predictable routines and nurturing environments
  • Strong communication between families and the center
  • Hands-on sensory exploration in a safe setting

Infants learn through touch, sound, movement and interaction. Caregivers create individualized routines to support each child’s development.

Teacher-child ratio: 1:4

Toddlers build independence and social skills through guided exploration and play.

The curriculum focuses on:

  • Consistent routines
  • Language development
  • Social-emotional growth
  • Hands-on learning experiences

Teacher-child ratio: 1:4

The preschool program supports learning through curiosity and play. Teachers observe children’s interests and design activities that expand knowledge and encourage skill development.

Children develop:

  • Social and collaboration skills
  • Early literacy and problem-solving abilities
  • Confidence and independence

Teacher-child ratio: 1:6-8

The Child Development Center serves:

  • CSUMB students (first priority)
  • Subsidized-pay employees
  • Private-pay employees
  • Community members

An active waitlist is maintained and monitored closely. Families are notified when space becomes available.

Families may apply through the online portal on the Early Development Services website.

Note: The confirmation number received after submitting an application does not reflect your position on the waitlist. Waitlist availability varies by age group.

The center offers:

  • Subsidized care (based on eligibility)
  • Private-pay options

Early Development Services averages tuition across the year, including scheduled closure days. Monthly billing does not change during holiday or professional development closures.

Monday to Friday
7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Open 12 months per year.

Scheduled Closures

The center is closed on:

  • Martin Luther King Jr. Day
  • Presidents’ Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Veterans Day
  • Thanksgiving Day and the day after
  • Winter Break (week between Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve)

Additional closures include:

  • Three professional development days in August (dates announced annually)
  • One day in April and one day in October (announced annually)
  • Early closure at 2:30 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month

All Early Development Services staff are selected for their experience, training and dedication to working with young children.

Staff qualifications include:

  • Background checks and fingerprinting (as required by law)
  • Mandated reporter training
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Ongoing professional development

Many staff members hold college degrees in early childhood education or related fields.
