Internship Excellence Program

About Us

We help students find internships that complement their interests and abilities. We also provide guidance for resume, cover letter, and interview preparation. We help employers develop internship opportunities and find qualified interns.
The Internship Excellence Program is part of the College of Business Accelerated Career Counseling, Exploration and Student Success (ACCESS) umbrella.

Our Mission

Connecting each College of Business student with at least one excellent internship while completing a degree at CSUMB.

Earn an Internship Excellence Certificate!

You can earn a Certificate of Internship Excellence! Just follow these easy steps:

  1. Submit a Student Information Survey once you have been hired.
  2. Complete your internship and submit a Student Feedback Survey.
  3. Ask your employer to submit an Employer Feedback Survey.
  4. Once your internship and all three forms are complete, you will be eligible to receive a Certificate of Internship Excellence from the College of Business.

You can qualify for more than one Internship Excellence Certificate!

Academic Credit

Students may earn academic credit while completing an internship if they qualify to enroll concurrently in an upper-division internship experience course. Most of our concentration pathways allow BUS 498 or HOSP 498 as one of the upper-division elective choices, combined with an appropriate internship. We recommend developing your learning plan to incorporate an internship for academic credit.

If you need special approval to count BUS 498 or HOSP 498 as one of your upper-division business electives, meet with your faculty concentration advisor. Make sure you meet all prerequisites. To earn academic credit, you must have junior or senior standing.

Yes, you can continue working for your current employer and get credit for BUS 498. However, your internship cannot simply be handling your current employment responsibilities. An internship needs to provide you with new challenges, allowing you to use your skills and knowledge in new ways.

Some companies have used this opportunity to give employees a chance to take on new management responsibilities, work in different departments, or complete valuable projects, such as developing an operations manual, or conducting an analysis of some aspect of business operations.

Your employer needs to work with you to design the learning outcomes of your internship, mentor you during your internship, and provide evaluations of your work.

Any student can have an internship. However, one must be a junior or senior to earn Academic Credit.

An intern can work part-time (10-20 hours) during the semester and full-time during the summer, if not enrolled in any summer courses.

For Academic Credit, an internship must provide at least 200 hours.

At this time, the College of Business cannot recommend unpaid internships except in rare cases.
