Travel Advisors Earn GSTC Certification in Landmark Sustainable Tourism Course Led by Dr. Paige P. Viren
October 18, 2024
A sustainability training led by Dr. Paige P. Viren provided a unique opportunity for travel advisors to earn their Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) certification. Sponsored by Classic Vacations, the course welcomed thirteen dedicated travel advisors who spent hours learning about sustainability practices within the travel industry. The training was hosted at Sheraton Maui Resort & Spa and Royal Lahaina Resort, both of which showcased their impressive sustainability efforts.
Dr. Viren extended her expertise to The Westin Maui Resort & Spa, where she conducted a GSTC certification course for hotel partner representatives across Hawaii. Participants reflected on their properties' current sustainability initiatives and collaborated on strategies for future improvement. Once certified, these individuals will be equipped to implement responsible tourism practices that support local communities and protect Hawaii's unique ecosystems and cultural heritage.
The GSTC certification program aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which address global challenges such as poverty, inequality, climate change, and environmental degradation. As Viren noted during the training, "I like to think of the SDGs as an interconnected puzzle in which progress on one goal influences progress on the others. Advisors who promote sustainable options to their clients contribute to the preservation of natural resources, cultures, and economies, helping to safeguard the industry’s long-term health."
In the coming weeks, each advisor will take an exam to earn their GSTC certification—a testament to their commitment to professional growth and responsible travel. This certification is globally recognized and verifies that individuals and organizations adhere to GSTC Criteria for sustainable tourism, demonstrating a commitment to practices that benefit the environment, society, and local economies.
The initiative received support from various sponsors, including the Hawaii Visitors & Convention Bureau (HVCB), Hyatt’s Inclusive Collection, Sheraton Hotels & Resorts, Outrigger Resorts & Hotels, Westin Hotels & Resorts, Hilton All-Inclusive, and Velas Resorts, among others. This collaborative effort underscores the travel industry's commitment to creating a more sustainable and equitable world by 2030 while helping travel professionals advance their knowledge and skills in sustainable tourism.
Through the groundbreaking partnership SHTM has with GSTC, students in the Sustainable Hospitality & Tourism Management (SHTM) program at Cal State Monterey Bay have the opportunity to earn a specialized certificate upon completing their coursework, further enhancing their credentials and readiness for the industry.
