On May 10th, SAS Global Academic Program and the College of Business organized faculty workshops aimed at discovering various opportunities in data analytics techniques. SAS has been incorporated into the B.S. Business Administration program curriculum, with an option to earn a SAS Business Analytics Joint Certificate, to impart critical skills needed for our students to succeed in a contemporary job market.
Intentional Design of High-impact Experiential Learning
Presented by Dr. Pat Tinsley McGill
April 14, 2017
As the College of Business moves through the cycle of assessment, we are prioritizing "closing the loop" to improve student learning across the curriculum of each program. Pedagogical interventions, which include implementing changes in the process of teaching across course sections, are among the most challenging, yet important, interventions to implement in any program. One essential element of any pedagogical intervention is the use of assignments and in-class/online activities intentionally designed to support learners in mastering skills and/or achieving deep understanding.
Through this workshop, you will gain experience using a process framework drawn from the science of learning to design assignments, activities, and projects that move students from surface learning to deep understanding, and you will learn how to apply fundamental principles of motivation to design learning experiences that both engage students and motivate them to excel.
The Golden Age of Sports Analytics: Moneyball on Campus Projects
Presented by Dr. Dave Schrader
Students participating in Dr. Schrader's presentationMay 1, 2017
Abstract: Dr. Dave Schrader, explains how business schools and athletic departments are working together to do "Moneyball on Campus" projects. In 2016 he gave 47 talks at 25 universities to 2700 students and helped sponsor numerous projects. This talk provides updates on faculty and student projects doing fan analytics and season ticket analysis for the business side of sport. In the team sports analytics area, I'll describe projects that built predictive models for next-play and zone coverage for a defensive football coach, as well as health and safety analytics using handhelds, plus 2 student projects for baseball and golf. The talk includes some new areas of potential research for one of the major college conferences, based on discussions with 3 league commissioners in early February. Tips on how to collaborate and communicate are also included. We'll wrap it up with pointers to where to find data sets and places to publish.
How to successfully teach a course in the 5-week format
May 12, 2017
We are currently going through the conversion of our MBA courses from the current 10-week format to the new 5-week format. This is also going to be the format used for the BSBA Online Degree Completion modality.
We have several COB faculty who have just gone through the conversion exercise and/or taught in the 5-week format. They will share their personal experience and insights with the group.
