Department of Mathematics and Statistics

Master problem-solving in a community that values mentorship, collaboration and real-world applications.

Learn Skills You Need and Tools You'll Use

In the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, students are more than just numbers. They’re known by name, challenged to grow and supported every step of the way. Faculty work closely with students to help them succeed in courses, research and career preparation.

Programs emphasize problem-solving, collaboration and data literacy: skills that translate across sectors and disciplines. Students don’t just study math, statistics and data science; they use it to solve real problems, in real contexts, through projects and partnerships woven into the curriculum.

Projects with Purpose

Our department leads impactful programs that blend research, innovation, and community outreach. Here are some of our recent initiatives and programs:

  • Woolpert Algebra Academy: A free summer program where 8th graders explore algebra with CSUMB faculty, hosted in partnership with Graniterock to spark early STEM interest.
  • Grading for Growth: Faculty are implementing standards-based grading in calculus and precalculus to support deeper learning and student mastery.
  • edge-DS: A regional initiative with UCSC that supports faculty development in data science education across colleges and high schools.
  • MASDER Project: Funded by the NSF, this research explores student and instructor attitudes in statistics and data science — powered in part by CSUMB undergrads.
  • Faculty Development and Active Learning: Grant-supported efforts focus on training CSUMB faculty to re-engage students through active, student-centered teaching practices.
  • Transition to College Math: Developed with Hartnell and local schools, this course prepares high school seniors for college-level math with real-world problem-solving.

“There’s so much you can do with statistics. I’ve gotten to present research at national conferences, and I’m still exploring everything this field has to offer. CSUMB gave me a supportive community and opened the door to a future I never imagined.”

What Happens Outside the Classroom Counts Too

From day one, students engage in applied learning opportunities that make their coursework relevant and impactful. Whether it's contributing to education initiatives, working on data-driven research or exploring new teaching strategies, the department supports experiences that help students grow academically and professionally.

Programs

Mathematics, B.S. and Minor

Mathematics provides the foundation for an array of professions. Our program will place you at the cutting edge of key mathematical principles, theoretical concepts and dynamic experiential learning to make the most of your future.

Statistics, Minor

The Statistics minor offers students a strong foundation in statistical theory, data modeling and applied analysis. Designed to complement any major, it builds essential skills in analytical thinking and problem-solving. Students gain practical tools to support evidence-based decision-making, preparing them for graduate study, teaching credentials, or careers in research, industry and public service.

Faculty Who Know You By Name

Students aren’t just numbers here. In our close-knit department, professors get to know you personally, creating a supportive, collaborative learning environment that extends beyond the classroom.

Opportunities to Do More

We encourage every student to go beyond the curriculum. Many participate in faculty-led research, present at conferences, or support community projects through service learning or internships — experiences that expand skills and open doors.

A Community That Stays Connected

Graduates stay in touch, sharing advice, opportunities and encouragement. Many alumni credit their time here (and those they met) for launching careers in education, government, tech and research.
