Promoting equitable and effective practices for educators serving English learners in the greater Monterey County area.
Established in 2018, the Monterey Institute for English Learners (MIEL) seeks to develop research on best practices for working with English learners and offers professional development resources for educators in the field.
There is a great need for supports for our English learner students throughout the greater Monterey County area.
While nearly half of the students in our county are classified as English learners – and even more identified as economically disadvantaged – only a fraction are meeting or exceeding grade level standards in math and in English language arts, as well as the requirements to make the eligible to attend college.
At MIEL, we’re committed to addressing these needs by utilizing best practices and innovative research.
We strive every day to achieve the following goals:
We provide a wide range of resources for educators, parents and bilingual students that are designed to enhance their learning experience.
