Student Veteran Services

Veterans Day

At Cal State Monterey Bay, Student Veteran Services proudly supports students who are veterans, active-duty service members, and military-connected dependents. We assist with certifying educational benefits and connect students to on- and off-campus resources to help them thrive academically and personally. Located on the former Fort Ord Army base, CSUMB was established in 1994 after the base’s closure, with classes beginning in fall 1995. Many of our students have family ties to Fort Ord, and some were stationed here themselves. Today, the Monterey Peninsula’s deep military roots and strong community of active-duty service members and veterans continue to shape and enrich the Otter experience.

Our Mission

CSUMB Student Veteran Services is dedicated to assisting veteran and military-connected students in achieving their higher educational goals on our campus.  All students, regardless of race, sex, color, ethnicity or national origin, who are interested in learning about Student Veteran Services are welcome.

College Tuition Fee Waiver for Dependents of Disabled Veterans

Also known as the CalVet College Fee Waiver, this is a CA State Grant program for dependent children or spouses of a veteran who has a service-connected disability rating with the VA of any percentage. Specific eligibility criteria and a link to the DVS 40 Waiver Application and listing of County Veteran Service Offices that process the application can be found on the CA Department of Veterans Affairs website page linked below:

CA College Tuition Fee Waiver Program

Reminder:  Waiver applications are processed by your local CA County Veterans Services Office (not CSUMB). Once you receive a waiver authorization code letter from your local County Veteran Service Office you MUST email, fax or drop it off at the CSUMB Veteran Services Office for processing.

Important notes:

  • The CalVet College Fee Waiver does not waive any campus-specific fees. It only waives the state tuition fee charge.
  • It cannot be used for Winter term or any courses that are not state funded.
  • The CalVet College Fee Waiver cannot be used for degree programs offered through CSUMB Extended Education as they are not not state funded.
  • The student needs to apply for a new waiver each academic year (waiver starts with the Fall semester).
  • The student must be considered a California resident by the CSU to use the waiver.
