Social Responsibility, Service & Self-Care
At Cal State Monterey Bay, service and social responsibility are core to who we are.
Service can be emotionally demanding, especially for those exposed to others’ pain or justice issues. Without intentional self-care, this can lead to compassion fatigue or burnout. That’s why CSUMB encourages a sustainable approach to service through:
- Setting boundaries
- Engaging in wellness practices
- Seeking support from peers, mentors, or professionals
- Choosing service that aligns with your values and wellness goals
By pairing service with self-care, students can engage in community work in ways that are both personally fulfilling and socially responsible. Self-care is the intentional practice of nourishing your body, mind, heart, and spirit. Self-care contributes to self-love, which is radical acceptance of who you are and your value as a person.
This workbook is a collaboration between the Service Learning Institute, Wellness RAFT, and Health and Wellness Services. It includes practical tools, reflection prompts, and planning guides to help students build sustainable self-care routines, prevent burnout, and stay grounded while serving others.
The second tab of the workbook includes campus resources organized by wellness domains (emotional, physical, social, spiritual, occupational, intellectual, environmental, and financial) to help students connect with supportive services and opportunities that align with personal and collective self-care goals.
