Civic Engagement and Voting Information

Civic engagement includes understanding how voting works, knowing your options, and finding reliable election information. The sections below bring together essential details to help you navigate registration, voting, and participation with confidence.

Registering and Voting

You can register to vote, update your registration, or check your voter status online. California also offers conditional voter registration close to Election Day.

If you’re registered in another state, you may be able to vote in your home state or register in California, depending on residency and eligibility.

Voting options may include:

  • Vote-by-mail ballots
  • In-person voting locations
  • Ballot drop boxes
  • Accessible voting services and language support

Every registered California voter receives a vote-by-mail ballot. Tools are also available to track your ballot once it has been mailed or returned.

Helpful reminders:

  • Registration deadlines apply, though conditional registration may be available
  • Ballots can be returned by mail or drop box
  • Replacement ballots are available if needed

Official Election Information

The California Secretary of State is the official source for voter registration, election deadlines, ballot details, and voting options. County elections offices manage local voting locations and logistics.

If you’re unsure where to begin or need help finding the right resource, Community Engagement can help point you in the right direction.

For questions about registering or voting in California, contact the California Secretary of State at (800) 345-VOTE (800-345-8683).

What Is the Ballot Bowl?

The Ballot Bowl is a statewide, nonpartisan initiative led by the California Secretary of State that tracks voter registration and participation among college and university students during even-numbered election years.

The Ballot Bowl program highlights civic participation in higher education by measuring engagement leading up to the general election. Its focus is awareness and participation, not advocacy.
