How GEAR UP Supports Students

Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a competitive grant program under the U.S. Department of Education that aims to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. 

GEAR UP at Cal State Monterey Bay partners with local schools to expand early college awareness and provide academic, social–emotional and financial preparation. The program serves entire grade-level cohorts (beginning in middle school) and continues through high school, helping students build confidence, develop skills and stay on track for postsecondary opportunities. Students at participating schools are automatically part of GEAR UP and can access all program services.

GEAR Up Services

• Tutoring - Provides academic support to help students strengthen core subject skills, improve study habits and stay on track with coursework.
• Mentoring - We connect students with a caring mentor who can offer guidance, encouragement, and real conversations about school, goals, and preparing for the future.
• Financial Education - We offer workshops and resources that introduce students to budgeting, financial decision-making, paying for college, and understanding financial aid options.
• Academic Preparation - GEAR Up supports students with college-going skills, including course planning, time management, goal-setting, and understanding what colleges look for.
