California State University, Monterey Bay ranked among the top performing universities in the country in three categories in the 2022-23 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges Rankings: No. 4 for Social Mobility, No. 7 for Top Public Schools, and No. 22 for Best Regional Universities in the West. The Regional ranking places CSUMB fourth among the CSUs.

The rankings are considered one of the most influential and anticipated recognitions for colleges and universities. Schools are ranked according to their performance across a set of widely accepted indicators of excellence.

Social Mobility recognizes universities that are more successful than others at advancing social mobility by enrolling and graduating large proportions of disadvantaged students awarded with Pell Grants. The vast majority of these federal grants are awarded to students whose adjusted gross family incomes are under $50,000.

Top Public Schools rankings are determined on a number of factors that include: graduation and retention rates; social mobility; graduation rate performance; undergraduate academic reputation; faculty resources for the 2021-22 academic year; student selectivity for the fall 2021 entering class; financial resources for students; the average alumni giving rate; and graduate indebtedness.

Regional Universities offer a full range of undergraduate and some master's programs. The West Region encompasses 15 states, including Arizona, California, Colorado, Texas, and Washington. A total 0f 150 schools in the West were evaluated and ranked.
