Christina Herzig created a scholarship for aspiring teachers in honor of her mother, Karen Rezavy, who passed away in 2013.

“Teachers have a special place in my heart — and I know how hard they work,” said Herzig, who graduated from CSUMB and taught for two years at Marina Vista Elementary School.

She said her mother was her biggest teacher in life, and she shares memories of her with scholarship recipients, and listens to their stories too, including how even a small amount — $1,000 to $1,500 — can make a difference.

“In some cases, [the students] told me the scholarship was the determining factor in whether they could proceed,” Herzig said.
