A $500,000 grant from Chipotle will help to build a new greenhouse complex for CSUMB.

A $500,000 gift from Chipotle Mexican Grill will support the construction of a greenhouse complex at Cal State Monterey Bay. The new facility is expected to contribute to agricultural education and strengthen CSUMB’s role in future farming practices, making it a key player in the industry.

Four separate greenhouses and a headhouse will be built on the east end of campus. The complex is expected to foster collaborative research, innovation and experimentation among students and faculty to tackle critical industry challenges.

“We are excited about the opportunity to collaborate with Chipotle to advance sustainable agriculture education,” said Thomas Horvath, dean of the College of Science. “Chipotle's support is a testament to the important work our faculty is doing to cultivate the next generation of agricultural workers. Its support for our planned greenhouse complex will be a game-changer.”

The university has seen substantial growth and success through its Agricultural Plant and Soil Science (AGPS) program, which was launched in 2020 and empowers local youth to pursue opportunities in an industry central to the region’s economy. Additionally, the introduction of the Mechatronics Engineering program in Fall 2024 is training the next generation in automation and robotics, further benefiting the agricultural sector.

"Being selected highlights the CSUMB AGPS program’s leadership in training future agricultural leaders,” said J.P. Dundore-Arias, associate professor and coordinator of the AGPS program. “This support will enhance our hands-on experiential learning and research capacity, empowering students to drive innovation in sustainable farming and tackle real-world agricultural challenges."

These donations are part of Chipotle’s commitment, announced in 2021, to give $5 million by the end of 2025 to support the future of farming.  Chipotle funds this commitment by contributing 5% of profits from its sales of Tractor Beverages to support farmers.

"How we grow our food is how we grow our future," said Chris Brandt, Chief Brand Officer at Chipotle. "As a brand dedicated to agriculture that is good for both people and the planet, Chipotle is always exploring opportunities to advance the industry and support farmers. These impactful projects, headed by some of the brightest minds in ag innovation, create optimism for widespread adoption of sustainable agriculture and the future of real food."

In conjunction with its agricultural pledge, Chipotle also unveiled its new short film, “Unfolded,” to illustrate how Chipotle supports high animal welfare standards and sustainable farming practices.
