CSUMB welcomes potential students to annual Open House
Prospective students can get information on housing, financial aid, the application process, programs and more.
With a record fall enrollment, Cal State Monterey Bay has seen more students than usual on its walkways and in its classrooms in recent weeks. That may be good preparation for Saturday, Oct. 5, when the campus will be swamped with prospective students and parents taking part in the annual Open House from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.
Students can take guided campus tours that include an up-close look at housing, dining and recreational opportunities. They can also engage in hands-on learning activities and demos offered by various academic departments to get a taste of what CSUMB has to offer and, hopefully, become inspired to enroll.
“I am excited to showcase our incredible institution,” said CSUMB President Vanya Quiñones. “I look forward to welcoming our prospective students and their families as they explore how they can find their place here. Our community has worked creatively to develop a top-ranked residential campus that offers outstanding academic opportunities, a supportive environment, and the ability for our students to move forward. I hope that during their visit, students and their supporters will discover why we value ‘The Strength of Us’ – our community – and what it truly means to be part of the Otter family.”
Highlights of the day include:
- On Divarty Street from 11:15 to noon, each of CSUMB’s undergraduate colleges will be tabling. Students can speak to professors and administrators about various programs and get information regarding potential courses of study.
- Formal presentations on admissions (one in Spanish), housing and a student panel discussion will be held in the Otter Student Union.
- Presentations on Financial Aid (offered in Spanish as well) and 1:1 support with applying to CSUMB will be available in the Library
- Campus and housing tours will be offered between noon and 2:30 p.m.
- The main quad will host a Campus Life and Resources Fair from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Various programs and clubs will be providing information and answering questions.
- Students can use the Guidebook app to schedule their own CSUMB adventure, exploring the areas most important to them. (The app is available for download beginning Wednesday morning.)
“We’re looking to showcase our strengths and offerings and really help prospective students to decide if CSUMB is for them,” said Kaci Turpin, director of New Student Programs.
Guests can park in Lot 59, with ADA parking available in Lot 19. Buses will transport guests to various campus locations.
This is the first year the university is holding two open houses. This Saturday’s event is for prospective first-year students. A second open house designed for transfer students (as well as first-year students who can’t attend Oct. 5) is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 26.
More details are available on the Open House registration page.
