Performing Otters student theater club stages ‘The Addams Family’
The performances are free to attend and run Fridays and Saturdays, April 19-27, at the World Theater.
Last year, the Performing Otters student theater club performed Stephen Sondheim’s dark musical “Sweeney Todd.” This year they have chosen the not-as-dark “The Addams Family.”
The plot turns on an increasingly optimistic Wednesday Addams as a young woman who has fallen in love with a sweet, ordinary young man, precipitating a meeting of the two families.
Michaela Velasco, the president of the club, said that choosing a musical is a decision the club doesn't take lightly.
“Since this is our club's second musical ever, we chose to go in a more comedic route than…Sweeney Todd,” Velasco said. “The Addams Family still has that edgy feeling our club enjoys while also having more modern, pop-style show tunes that we wanted to try and tackle this year.”
She said that although it contains jokes aimed at adults, the show is family-friendly. And she is eager for audiences to see the elaborate costumes.
“All of our cast and crew members are students on top of being in this production, so we put ourselves through a lot to be a part of these shows because we have such a passion for this craft,” she said.
There are 25 people in the cast and nine people in the production crew. They look forward to interacting and taking pictures with audience members in the lobby after each show.
The performances are free to attend and run 7 p.m. Fridays and 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturdays, April 19-27, at the World Theater, 5260 6th Ave., Seaside.
