CSUMB students devote summer to math and statistics research

Four CSUMB math and statistics students participated in the National Research Experience for Undergraduates program over the summer.

CSU Monterey Bay statistics major Stephanie Lara-Sotelo won the Outstanding Poster Award at MathFest, a national conference hosted by the Mathematical Association of America in Tampa, Florida, in August. Lara-Sotelo won for her work on reliable measurement in exercise science.

She was one of four CSUMB math and statistics students who participated in the National Research Experience for Undergraduates program.

The students spent June living on campus and attending training and study sessions in the library. They continued to work on their own during July and, in August, three of them – Lara-Sotelo, Kyra Batarse and Marleen Barron – traveled to Tampa to present their work at MathFest, one of the nation’s largest math events. The fourth student, Jakob Garcia, presented his work at the CSUMB Summer Research Symposium.

Two manuscripts from the students’ work have been submitted to academic journals and are currently under review.
