HSI Week celebration features “grito” contest

A “grito” competition highlights the Celebrando Nuestra Independencia, a Hispanic Serving Institutions Week event.

Don’t be surprised by the loud calls echoing across campus on Friday, Sept. 15, as a “grito” competition highlights the Celebrando Nuestra Independencia, a Hispanic Serving Institutions Week event. For those who may not know, a grito is a joyous shout that is often part of traditional Mexican celebrations. In recent years, grito competitions have become more popular in the United States. There are even grito apps available for smartphones.

The fiesta, from 6-7:30 p.m. on the Otter Student Union Plaza, will also feature live mariachi music. Sponsored by CSUMB’s Office of Inclusive Excellence and Sustainability, the event helps close out a week filled with celebrations focused on the contributions of Hispanic students, faculty, staff and administrators, and on the role CSUMB plays in serving the Hispanic population.
