Established in 2018, the Monterey Institute for English Learners (MIEL) seeks to develop research on best practices for working with English learners and offers professional development resources for educators in the field.
Built on Transformative Collaborations With Schools and Districts
There is a great need for supports for our English learner students throughout the greater Monterey County area.
While nearly half of the students in our county are classified as English learners – and even more identified as economically disadvantaged – only a fraction are meeting or exceeding grade level standards in math and in English language arts, as well as the requirements to make the eligible to attend college.
At MIEL, we’re committed to addressing these needs by utilizing best practices and innovative research.
Our Goals
We strive every day to achieve the following goals:
- Engage in innovative research to support the needs of English Learners/Emergent Bilinguals
- Be a hub for generating and disseminating information on best practices for working with English Learners
- Provide professional development for teachers that incorporate evidence-based practices
- Support preparation of pre-service education professionals at CSUMB
- Engage in transformative and ongoing collaborations with school sites and districts in the greater Monterey County area
