Bachelor's Admission Requirements

Bachelor's Degree

To be considered for admission, students must meet all academic and English proficiency requirements by the end of the term or semester prior to enrollment. Summer coursework cannot be used to meet eligibility requirements for Fall terms. All documents must be submitted in their original language, accompanied by certified English translations.

Academic Requirements

First-time freshmen are students applying directly from secondary school (high school) without any university credit.

Academic requirements

  • Equivalent of a 2.50 Grade Point Average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale in high school
  • High school diploma equivalent or certificate of graduation
  • Official high school transcript (official record of marks/scores/grades)
  • National test scores (if required by home country)
  • Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit are accepted but not required

Lower division transfer students have fewer than 60 transferrable university credits.

All undergraduate applicants must submit an official transcript from each college in which they have attended. This includes special sessions, correspondence, and audited courses, as well as any college in which the student was enrolled but withdrew without earning credit.

Academic requirements

  • Minimum 2.0 GPA in all transferable university credits
  • Must be in "good standing" with current or most recent college or university
  • Official university or college transcript (official record of marks/scores/grades)
  • Must have completed high school with a minimum 2.4 GPA (on a 4.0 scale)
  • High school diploma equivalent or certificate of graduation
  • Official high school transcript (official record of marks/scores/grades)
  • National test scores (if required by home country)
  • SAT or ACT scores required for students graduating from a US high school or a US accredited international school
  • Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credit are accepted but not required

If you attended college or university outside of the US, you will need to submit your official university transcript to a foreign credit evaluation service. We will accept foreign credential evaluations from the companies listed below:

  • WES (World Evaluations Services)
  • SpanTran (Discount provided to students utilizing the CSUMB SpanTran application)
  • ECE (Education Credential Evaluators)
  • IERF (International Education Research Foundation)

Note: If you use one of these services, you do not need to submit your original official transcript or its English translation.

Upper division transfer students have 60 or more transferrable university credits.

English Proficiency Requirement

The English proficiency requirement can be satisfied by providing any of the following:

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)

  • Undergraduate minimum scores: 
    • TOEFL PBT (Paper-Based Exam): 500
    • TOEFL iBT (Internet-Based Exam): 61

The CSUMB TOEFL code is 1945. Visit the ETS TOEFL website to request your official score report.

International English Language Testing System (IELTS)

  • Undergraduate minimum score:
    • IELTS Overall Band: 6.0

Official IELTS test scores must be sent to the Office of Admissions. Please list CSUMB as a recipient of your scores when you take the test or contact the Test Center where you took the IELTS exam to request that they send an official Test Report Form to CSUMB. More information is on the IELTS website.

Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE)

  • Undergraduate minimum score:
    • PTE: 45

Official PTE scores must be sent directly to CSUMB from Pearson. Please visit the PTE website for additional information.

If an applicant has attended a high school or college in the U.S. for three or more years, or has attended a high school where English is the principal language of instruction for three or more years, the TOEFL or other English language proficiency exam is not required.

Please note:

  • CSUMB interprets "where English is the principal language of instruction" to mean that a school is located in a country where English is the daily medium of communication for the majority of residents, and that students receive academic instruction in English at all levels of education.
  • Countries currently meeting this above requirement are: United States, Australia, Belize, Canada, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Nigeria, plus a few nations in the Commonwealth Caribbean (Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, and Trinidad and Tobago).

Students can meet the English proficiency requirement by transferring credit from a community college or 4-year university that meets the CSUMB General Education Area A2 (Written Communication) requirement.

If you are attending a California community college, you can find a list of the college's transferable A2 courses by visiting www.assist.org.

If you are attending any other type of college or university, please send your transcript and a course description/outline of the class that may meet the A2 requirement to internationaladmissions@csumb.edu for review.

  • Duolingo: 95

  • If you are applying to CSUMB through an agency or a partner university, there may be alternative ways to meet the English proficiency requirement, as outlined in CSUMB's agreement with your agency or university. Please check with your agent or home campus coordinator for details.

If you do not meet the minimum English proficiency requirements, you may be eligible for Conditional admission. There may be alternate options for proving English proficiency, contact International Admissions to discuss your situation. 

Transfer Credit Information

Students who have passed certain exams can earn university credit. We accept AS-Level and A-Level scores from all of the major testing companies. 

  • IB (International Baccalaureate)
  • AP (Advanced Placement)
  • AS-Level (Advanced Subsidiary), and A-Level (Advanced)

Visit the records website for more information about which IB and AP subjects qualify for credit and the minimum passing scores. Please email a copy of your AS- or A-level score report to International Admissions for a preliminary evaluation of credit.

Students who come from countries where standard pre-university education is 13 years (ex. Norway) may earn a maximum of 30 semester units of university-level credit for coursework and/or exams passed in their 13th year.
