Work schedules at CSUMB are set by departments to meet operational needs and may vary by unit; most full-time positions follow an eight-hour day and 40-hour week. All staff and management employees should have a Work Schedule Form on file with Human Resources, while faculty should consult the Academic Calendar for unit-specific schedules.

Nonexempt employees are entitled to rest periods (15 minutes for each four hours worked) and a meal period of at least 30 minutes (up to 60) for shifts of six hours or more. Rest breaks count as hours worked and should be taken near the middle of each work period. Meal periods must be uninterrupted and the employee relieved of duty; if an employee is required to work during a meal period it must be paid. Overtime for nonexempt employees is authorized work beyond 40 hours in a workweek.

Additional Information

A nonexempt employee is entitled to a meal period of not less than thirty minutes, and up to sixty minutes within each six hour shift. The time of the meal period shall be scheduled by the appropriate administrator and should be at or near the middle of the workday. An employee may not shorten or eliminate his/her scheduled lunch periods to alter the beginning or ending of a workday. If an employee works less than six hours in a day, they can voluntarily agree with the appropriate administrator to waive their right to a meal period.

Meal periods conditions:

  1. meal periods are at least thirty minutes in duration,
  2. the employee is completely relieved of his/her duty, and
  3. the employee is free to leave his/her work station if the employee so desires.

An employee who is required by an appropriate administrator to remain at work during a meal period shall be paid and the meal period shall count as hours worked. An employee may not elect to work during a meal period; it must be taken.

Overtime is defined as authorized time worked in excess of forty hours in a seven day period (work week) by non-exempt employees based on the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and in compliance with the appropriate collective bargaining contract. See also Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Policies.

An employee is allowed rest periods each workday of fifteen minutes for each four hours worked. Rest period schedules are determined by the appropriate administrator in accordance with the operational needs of the department, and should be taken in the middle of each work period. Rest periods count towards hours worked. Rest period time cannot be cumulative to replace any portion of a meal period or change the beginning or end of a work day.

The work week for normal work schedules consists of seven consecutive twenty-four hour periods beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Sunday and ending at 12:00 midnight the following Saturday.

Faculty should consult the Academic Calendar.
