CSUMB provides paid parental leave benefits, maternity, paternity, adoption, and foster care to eligible employee groups, subject to applicable restrictions and collective bargaining agreements. Employees must meet with Human Resources to review job protections, pay options, and how leave benefits coordinate, including Pregnancy Disability Leave (PDL) and CSU Family and Medical Leave (FML). Paid Parental Leave runs concurrently with CSU Family and Medical Leave, except where Pregnancy Disability Leave protections apply. The university provides paid Parental Leave (Maternity, Paternity, Adoption, and Foster Care) benefits to certain employee groups, subject to certain restrictions. Employees requesting this type of leave must meet with Human Resources to discuss applicable benefits, such as Pregnancy Disability Leave job protection, pay options, Family Medical Leave job protections, and how other leave benefits are coordinated. Paid Parental Leave (Maternity, Paternity, Adoption, and Foster Care) runs concurrently with CSU Family and Medical Leave, except where Pregnancy Disability Leave job protection applies. If a female employee is disabled by pregnancy, childbirth or a related medical condition, she is entitled under California Government Code Section 12945 (b) (2) to take pregnancy disability leave.

  • Up to four months (88 workdays for a full-time employee) disability leave.
  • If more than four months of leave is provided for other types of temporary disabilities, the same leave must be made available to women who are disabled due to pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition.
  • Only when actually disabled (includes time off needed for prenatal care, severe morning sickness, doctor-ordered bed rest, childbirth, recovery from childbirth, and related medical conditions as certified by a doctor).
  • This leave is without pay, but the employee may use vacation, personal holiday, CTO, non-industrial disability insurance pay, and sick leave.
  • PDL runs consecutively (not concurrently) with Family Medical Leave (FML).

Under the Pregnancy Disability Leave Act, a female employee disabled by pregnancy or childbirth may request a reasonable accommodation for the duration of the pregnancy.

Maternity leave under the California Education Code may provide eligible permanent employees with job protected unpaid time off for a maximum of one year, for the purposes of pregnancy, childbirth or the recovery there from as determined by the employee, leave credits may be used in combination with unpaid leave. Leave credits must be exhausted prior to using unpaid leave. Some Collective Bargaining Agreements supersede Education Code Section 89519. This benefit is also subject to Pregnancy Disability Leave, CSU Family Medical Leave.
