Guardian Scholars

A welcoming community at CSUMB supporting students who have experienced foster care, homelessness, or similar life transitions — through graduation and beyond.

About Us

The Guardian Scholars Program at Cal State Monterey Bay provides individualized support to help students navigate the academic systems and campus life. The program offers help with admissions and registration, advising, financial‑aid referrals, and more. Students also receive access to free printing and laptop loans, participate in workshops and cultural events, and connect with a retention advisor who understands their unique needs.

A stocked supply pantry, emergency grants, and connections to community services help round out the holistic approach that defines Guardian Scholars.

Eligibility and How To Apply

Who Is Eligible for Guardian Scholars?

The program supports CSUMB students who have experienced foster care, been wards of the court, or grown up in kinship or guardianship care. It also welcomes unaccompanied homeless youth and students who were orphaned or adopted.

To join, students must be admitted to CSUMB. Incoming first‑year students are encouraged to apply to the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), as most participants qualify for both programs.

How to Apply?

Students who are admitted—or are currently attending CSUMB—can apply by submitting a short application, a verification document confirming eligibility, a personal essay, and a photo.

Prospective students who have not yet applied to the university can complete an interest form and will be contacted by a program coordinator. Application links and detailed instructions are available on the Guardian Scholars Program website. For questions about eligibility or deadlines, email guardianscholars@csumb.edu.
