Our core objective is to advise, govern, oversee policy and direction and assist with the leadership and general promotion of the Foundation to support the organization’s mission and needs.

Board of Directors

The Foundation of CSUMB is an auxiliary organization of The California State University ("CSU") and serves as the philanthropic arm of the university. It is governed by the California Education Code §8900 et seq. and the administrative regulations of The CSU as outlined in Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations.

Our Mission and Purpose

The Foundation is organized for the following public and charitable purposes:

  • Foster, encourage, and promote the goals and purposes of California State University, Monterey Bay (“CSUMB”) including providing strategic advice and counsel to the president and other university officers;
  • Promote a greater and better understanding in the community of CSUMB’s role and policies as they relate to CSUMB’s higher education mission;
  • Administer gifts, bequests, devises, endowments, trusts and similar funds, and provide short and long-term management of these investment funds; and
  • Play an active role in fundraising and development processes in support of CSUMB;
  • Provide financial assistance to CSUMB and its goals and purposes through gifts, loans, and allocations to CSUMB and its controlled affiliates;
  • Do any other act or thing and engage in and carry on any other activity in any manner connected with or incidental to, or calculated to promote, assist, aid, or accomplish any of the aforesaid purposes.

Ethics

The Foundation of Cal State Monterey Bay is committed to ethical leadership, transparency and responsible stewardship. The following principles guide the conduct of board members and staff.

Each board director is responsible for upholding ethical standards in all public conduct and in all services provided in support of the Foundation. This includes acting with integrity, accountability and transparency in decision-making, and ensuring that all actions reflect the Foundation’s mission and commitment to responsible stewardship.

The Board of Directors exercises due diligence in supporting the Foundation. Each director:

  • Acts in good faith

  • Exercises the care that an ordinarily prudent person would under similar circumstances

  • Acts in the best interest of the Foundation at all times

  • Remains informed about the Foundation’s financial status

  • Uses accurate and complete information to guide decisions

  • Maintains familiarity with Foundation policies and procedures

Directors act in the best interest of the Foundation rather than in the interest of any individual or outside organization. All board members and Foundation staff disclose any known or potential conflicts of interest.

The Board of Directors establishes policies and procedures to ensure all fundraising and gift management activities meet or exceed applicable laws and ethical standards.

The Foundation of Cal State Monterey Bay provides reasonable compensation for services when appropriate. Directors are not compensated for their service, except for reimbursement of approved expenses or in limited circumstances when compensation is determined to be in the best interest of the Foundation and does not present a conflict of interest.
